ALLENDALE, Mich.-- Two high scoring affairs resulted in a marathon doubleheader between the Grand Valley State and Ohio Dominican baseball teams on Sunday, an all-day affair in which both sides came away with a win and a loss. The Panthers thumped the Lakers 16-8 in the first game, a seven inning game that last two hours and 40 minutes, and the Lakers avenged the earlier loss with a 13-9 decision in the nightcap, as the light faded and the temperature dropped. All told the doubleheader lasted more than six and a half hours, and saw the Lakers record move to 17-13 on the season and 5-7 in GLIAC play.
Game one was not one worth remembering for the Lakers, as the Panthers scored in every inning and never relented, beating out 16 runs on 19 hits across three different Laker pitchers. After falling behind 5-0 in the second inning, the Lakers got back a pair in the bottom of the second off of RBI base knocks by
Alex Young and
Josh Smith, and would score four runs in the bottom of the third as well. RBI singles from Young and Nate were the catalyst for the four-run inning, but then the Lakers saw ODU answer right back with offense of their own. Back-to-back three run innings in the third and fourth opened the lead to 11-6, followed by a three-run sixth inning sandwiched by solo runs in the fifth and seventh frames to get them to 16 runs.
GVSU tacked on two more runs in the seventh to put up a respectable total of eight runs in the affair, but the Panthers had exterted their will on the Laker pitching staff and the damage was done.
The nightcap was a much more favorable result, although one that took a lengthy three and a half hours to achieve, the last hour fo which was spent trying to beat the fading sunset. GVSU's offense was propelled to a win in the nightcap largely thanks to the bat of
Brody Andrews, as the catcher hit three RBI doubles on the day and posted a team-high five RBI.
Andrews torched his first double with two men on and the Lakers trailing 1-0 in the first frame, as the blast to right center plated
Austin LaDoux and
Matt Williams to give GVSU the early lead. After Ohio Dominican scored twice in the third to go up 3-2, a wild pitch by Panther started allowed Young to score the Laker's third run to tie the game, leaving Andrews at the plate with a man on in a tie ballgame. This time, Andrews slapped a shot down the right field line for another double, plating LaDoux once more and giving GVSU a 4-3 lead, which grew to 5-3 on an RBI single by
Connor Glick that score Andrews moments later.
A solo run in the fourth and three more in the fifth gave ODU a 7-5 lead over the Lakers, but a towering shot by Andrews to left field that hit the top bar of the outfield fence and bounced back into play got him to second and
Josh Smith and Williams around to score to tie the game up at 7-7. An RBI double by Glick then plated Andrews to go up 8-7, before Glick scored easily on a wild triple by
Keith Browning that saw Browning round third to head home for an inside-the-park home run before thinking better of the decision and heading back to third.
Now up by a 9-7 score, the Lakers saw that lead briefly cut in half in the sixth inning by a solo home run off the bat of Lee Sponseller, only to score three of their own in the bottom of the frame via a wild pitch, a Williams RBI single and a sacrifice fly by
Johnny Nate to score
Seth Johnson. The Panthers scored a run of their own in the eighth off of a sac fly, but were shut down the rest of the way by closer
Matt Williams, who pitched 1.1 scoreless innings and struck out four to earn the save, his sixth.
Glick added an RBI single in the bottom of the eighth to close out the scoring at 13-9.
Evan Koning (1-0) earned his first win as a Laker by pitching 1.2 effective and scoreless innings of relief, striking out three and allowing just one hit.
Andrews led GVSU with five RBI on the day via four hits (three doubles), while
Matt Williams had five hits and scored five times.
Alex Young also notched five hits, scored three runs and drove in three runs in the opener. Glick tallied three hits and drove in three, while Smith score twice and notched three doubles on the day.
