Lakers Defeat Oilers on Last Minute Goal

GVSU improves to 3-6 on the year and 2-0 in GLIAC play

FINDLAY, Ohio -- The Grand Valley State (3-6, 2-0 GLIAC) women's lacrosse team defeated GLIAC foe Findlay on Friday afternoon with a goal in the final 25 seconds of the match as the Lakers took down the Oilers 18-17. GVSU's game winning goal was scored by freshman Abbi O'Neal with just 22 seconds remaining in the second half on her third goal of the game.

The Lakers opened up the scoring of the day on a goal from Meggan Loyd just 44 seconds into the game. Findlay would answer back with a goal from Kyra Bradley just 30 seconds later before GVSU would go on a 7-2 stretch over the course of the next 11 minutes of the game to widen their lead to 8-3. Loyd scored three goals during the run while Sarah Stagaard, Meghan Datema, and O'Neal would score a goal apiece during the run. The Lakers would score four more goals during the half from Ashley Bailey and three additional goals from Datema. Findlay would score six goals of their own to close out the first half as a 12-9 Laker lead.

During the second half, Loyd would kick off the scoring for the Lakers at 25:14 after the opening goal of the half was scored by Findlay's Brie Caruso at 28:11. Olivia Sherman would score Findlay's next goal before Datema pushed the GVSU lead back to 14-11 at 20:36 in the second half. Findlay would then go on a five goal run to take a 16-14 lead with 12 minutes remaining in the game. GVSU would tie up the game on a pair of goals from O'Neal and Datema at 8:14 and 6:59. Ciara Burud would put the Oilers up by a goal at 17-16 at the 6:15 mark. The Lakers would tie up the match again at 3:56 on a goal from Carolina Reis before the game winner was scored by O'Neal in the waning seconds of the game. 

Datema led the way for the Lakers in draw controls with seven, while Chelsey Bishop and Elizabeth Yeomans led the Lakers in ground ball recoveries. Yeomans would also cause two turnovers during the match. Sarah Zwilsky was awarded the win after playing all 60 minutes during Saturday's game. 

GVSU travels to Tiffin on Sunday for a matchup against the only GLIAC opponent to defeat them last season. The match will begin at 1:00 PM at Frost-Kalnow Stadium in Tiffin, Ohio.
