ALLENDALE, Mich. -- The Grand Valley State (7-8, 6-1 GLIAC) women's lacrosse team was able to defeat the Lake Erie Storm (9-4, 2-4 GLIAC) by a score of 15-11 on Senior Day on Friday night at the GVSU Lacrosse Complex. The Lakers were able to seven goals in the first half, followed by eight goals in the second to secure a win over the Storm.
In the first half, Lake Erie took an early lead, scoring the first goal of the game at 28:28, but GVSU would answer quickly with a goal to tie it up at 1-1 just a minute and two seconds later from
Carly Shisler. Lake Erie took their final lead of the game at 26:05 before Grand Valley was able to tie the game up at 2-2 off of a goal from
Abbi O'Neal at 24:10.
Ashley Bailey would follow up O'Neal's goal with a pair of goals to give the Lakers their first lead of the game. Lake Erie would tie the game back up with a pair of goals from Anna Spin before
Meghan Datema scored a goal at 11:20 to go up 5-4. The Storm tied the game back up at 5-5 at 2:03, but the Lakers would score two goals from
Meggan Loyd and Bailey in the final minute of the first half to go up 7-5 at the half.
After the half, Lake Erie was able to score the first goal of the second half at 25:19. O'Neal would score the next Laker goal at 24:39, followed by a Datema goal at 23:42 to put the Lakers up 9-6. The Storm would score three of the next four goals to cut the Laker lead to just one at 10-9 before GVSU scored three consecutive goals to go up 13-9 from Datema, Shisler, and Loyd. GVSU and Lake Erie would tack on two more goals each, with both Laker goals being scored by Datema to give her five on the day.
Leading the Lakers in assists was
Ryan Skomial, who put up five assists in the game, pulling her assist total to 11 over the past two games. The ground ball leader for GVSU was Shisler, who provided five ground ball recoveries. Skomial and Datema both had three draw controls to lead the way for the Lakers.
Sarah Zwilsky was awarded the win in goal for GVSU.
The Laker seniors honored on the night were Zwilsky, Skomial,
Kira Dosenberry,
Kelly Leibovitz,
Chelsey Bishop,
Kali Heller-Spencer, and
Danielle Tunnell. The senior class put up an overall record of 51-22 and a 32-2 record in GLIAC play over the course of the past four seasons.
GVSU will end up as either the first or second seed in the GLIAC tournament that begins next week. UIndy defeated Tiffin on Friday night, meaning there is currently a three way tie atop the GLIAC standings. Tiffin and McKendree are both 5-1 in conference play, but will face off against each other on Sunday. Should Tiffin win over McKendree, the Lakers will be the second seed in the tournament. Should McKendree win over Tiffin, the Lakers will be the number one seed.
