INDIANAPOLIS -- The Grand Valley State (2-6) women's lacrosse team was able to take home a 15-11 win in their opening GLIAC matchup against UIndy (6-3) on Saturday afternoon after a late second-half scoring run. The Lakers out-scored the Greyhounds 6-0 over the course of the final 13 minutes of the game to escape with a win after trailing 11-8 at the 15:03 mark in the second half.
In the first half, the Lakers started the game with the first two goals of the match from
Carly Shisler at the 29:33 mark and
Kira Dosenberry at the 28:34 mark. UIndy would score to make the game a 2-1 lead at the 25:24 mark for GVSU before the Lakers were able to pull away to a 4-1 lead on another Shisler goal at 25:07, followed by a
Ryan Skomial goal at the 23:02 mark.
Abbi O'Neal would score GVSU's next goal at the 19:13 mark to put the Lakers up 5-2.
Maria D'Angelo and
Meghan Datema would provide the final goals of the first half for the Lakers to give GVSU a 7-5 lead going into the second half.
UIndy would score the first goal of the second half at the 27:58 mark before GVSU's Skomial would answer back at 27:17 with a goal to stretch the Laker lead back to 8-6. The Greyhounds would go on to score the next five goals of the game from the 25 minute mark to the 15 minute mark and took an 11-8 lead in the process. The Lakers would start their comeback on a goal from
Meggan Loyd at the 12:15 mark of the second half. Datema scored her second goal of the game at 6:48, while O'Neal would bring the score to 11-11 at 6:15 in the second half. Datema and O'Neal would continue the scoring to end the game, each netting a pair of goals in the final six minutes of the game to give the edge to the Lakers and close out the 15-11 victory.
Sarah Zwilsky was the winning goalie for the Lakers as the GVSU goalie recorded seven saves on the game. Dosenberry led the Lakers in assists with four, while O'Neal and Datema scored four goals each to lead the GVSU scoring.
The Lakers' next match will be next week at the University of Findlay in Findlay, Ohio on April 7 at 4:00 PM.
