SPARKS, Md. -- The #16 Grand Valley State (1-6) women's lacrosse team traveled to Sparks, Md. just two weeks after their three game trip to the east coast to take on #7 Rollins College (10-2). The Lakers fell to the Tars 16-10 due to a strong second half from the Rollins offense.
The Lakers held a lead at three separate times throughout the first half, but were never able to create more than a one goal lead in the period. Rollins kicked off the scoring in the game at the 26:48 mark and followed that up with another goal at 25:55. GVSU would storm back with three consecutive goals from
Sarah Stagaard (assisted by
Chelsey Bishop),
Ashley Bailey (assisted by
Kira Dosenberry), Dosenberry (unassisted) to take a 3-2 lead. GVSU and Rollins would trade goals as Rollins would draw even at 3-3 before
Abbi O'Neal would score a goal at the 11:43 mark to give GVSU a 4-3 lead. The Tars would bring the game to a tie again at 4-4 and Stagaard would give GVSU their final lead of the game a little over a minute later at 5-4.
Rollins would score two consecutive goals to bring the game to 6-5, while
Carly Shisler answered the goal with one of her own just over 30 seconds later to bring the game back even at 6-6. The Tars would score a goal with just eight seconds remaining in the half to take a 7-6 lead into halftime. The Tars put up a barrage of goals in the second half, outscoring the Lakers 7-1 over the course of the first 21 minutes in the half.
Stagaard led the way for the Lakers in goals with three, while O'Neal was the team leader in draw controls with five on the day. The Lakers were out-shot 20 to nine in the second half after just a five shot difference in the first half at 15-10.
Sarah Zwilsky and
Brianna DeMilia split time in goal again with Zwilsky playing the first half and DeMilia playing the second half. Zwilsky recorded five saves and surrendered seven goals, while DeMilia recorded five saves and gave up nine goals.
The Lakers begin conference play next Saturday when they travel to UIndy to take on the Greyhounds to kick off their GLIAC schedule. The game will begin at 1:00 PM at Key Stadium.
