CANTON, Ohio—The Grand Valley State baseball team dropped a tough decision in the first game of Saturday's doubleheader against Walsh University before rebounding to take the second game 12-8. With the win, the Lakers improve to 12-9 overall and 1-3 in GLIAC play.
The Cavaliers walked off in game one, 3-2, after spoiling
Ryan Arnold's gem on the mound with runs in the seventh and eighth innings. Arnold was cruising and on his way to a win after the sixth inning, as
Alex Young's two run home run in the third frame had staked Arnold out to a 2-1 lead. In the seventh, however, Arnold surrendered a leadoff single, and after fanning the next two batters, the Cavaliers runner advanced to second on a passed ball. From there, the runner was plated on an RBI single to right field, and the game was tied.
After the Lakers went down in order in the top of the first extra inning, the Cavaliers had a chance to walk-off on GVSU for the second straight game. With one out, they did so on an Andrew Stalnaker solo home run to left field off Arnold, taking game one by a 3-2 score.
Arnold (1-1) pitched a complete game, turning in a quality start with three runs allowed (two earned). He scattered nine hits over 7.1 innings and struck out a season-high nine batters.
In the second game of the doubleheader, the Lakers fell behind to Walsh 1-0 in the first inning, trailing briefly before
Connor Glick belted his third home run of the year to center field to plate two runs and take a 2-1 lead. After the Cavaliers equalized with a run of their own in the bottom of the second, they took the lead once again in the third with a solo home run by Luke Caple.
GVSU loaded the bases to begin the fourth on a HBP, a single and a base on balls. A wild pitch by Walsh starter Tyson Lautanen allowed
Anthony Villar to score, tying the game at 3-3. Glick then delivered a big hit once again, driving in two runs with a single to left center to take a 5-3 lead. Glick then came in to score on a double by
Michael Battistelli, who later came in to score on an RBI single up the middle by
Alex Young. By the time the smoke had cleared, five Laker runs had crossed the plate, and GVSU owned a 7-3 lead over Walsh.
After Walsh scored three times over the next two innings to cut the lead to 7-6, GVSU exploded for five more runs in the top of the sixth frame. With two outs,
Keith Browning's double to right field scored
Michael Battistelli, who had reached on a fielder's choice.
Alex Young then singled to get aboard and move Browning to third, from which he scored moments later on an RBI single by
Johnny Nate. After a Cavaliers pitching change, second baseman
Josh Smith continued his hot streak at the plate, delivering an RBI double to plate Young and Nate. Smith then came around to score on an RBI single by
Anthony Villar to complete the scoring.
Walsh would tack on two more runs in the bottom of the seventh to pull within 12-8, but that would be the final margin, as the Lakers claimed the final game of the series.
Glick was 3-for-4 in the game with a two-run home run. He drove in four runs and scored two more. Smith drove in a pair of runs, while Young and Nate both recorded a pair of hits, a run scored and a run batted in. GVSU starter
Mitch Ashcraft earned the victory, pitching 4.1 innings and allowing six runs (four earned).
Tate Brawley pitched 2.1 innings in relief, and
Troy Dykhuis recorded the final out in relief.
