#10 Lakers Split Twinbill, Win Series with Wisconsin-Parkside

WESTFIELD, Ind.—The #10 Grand Valley State baseball team split an afternoon doubleheader with Wisconsin-Parkside on Sunday in Westfield, Indiana, taking the first game by a 7-3 score before being shut out in the matinee, 1-0. The twinbill was the final two games in a three-game series between the two teams, as GVSU bested the Rangers 5-1 on Saturday, and won the series 2-1.

GVSU (11-6) took game one by scoring four runs in the final frame to stun Parkside, which had rallied from a 2-0 deficit to take a brief 3-2 lead, before the game was tied at 3-3 entering the seventh inning. Third baseman Austin LaDoux led off the seventh inning with a home run to left field, his first of the season, to give GVSU a 4-3 lead. After Michael Battistelli reached on an error and advanced to second via a sacrifice bunt, shortstop Johnny Nate delivered an RBI single up the middle to score Battistelli. Following a walk by Anthony Villar, Connor Glick doubled to score both Nate and Villar and open up a 7-3 lead. With a four-run lead in hand, reliever Noah Lamboley shut down the Rangers in the bottom of the frame to secure the victory.

Lamboley (3-0) earned the win by pitching 2.1 innings in relief of starter Ryan Arnold, who hurled 4.2 innings and allowed three runs (two earned) on five hits, while striking out four.

The Lakers took a 2-0 lead in the second inning of a two-run double from LaDoux, whose two-bagger to left field drove in Seth Johnson and Connor Glick, who had hit back-to-back one out singles. That lead held until the bottom of the fifth, when the Rangers took advantage of a Laker error to score three runs and take a late 3-2 lead. Not to be deterred, GVSU tied up the game via a Villar RBI triple to right field to score Brody Andrews, who had singled to lead off the top of the sixth.

LaDoux finished the game with team-highs of three hits and three RBI's, while Glick, Villar and Nate all scored a run and drove in another. Johnson and Andrews each had a hit and scored a run.

In the second game, the Lakers were unable to muster any offense against Rangers starter Connor Cunningham, who threw 6.1 innings of shutout ball, scattering six hits and three walks over that span. The Lakers left six runners on base and very nearly tied the game with two outs in the bottom of the seventh, as Austin LaDoux headed for home on a wild pitch thrown to the backstop by Rangers closer Keaton Kastberg. A fortuitous bounce back to the catcher allowed a quick flick of the ball back to Kastbrg at the plate, who tagged a sliding LaDoux out on the play and sealed the 1-0 win for Wisconsin-Parkside.

GVSU will next play a four-game road series against Walsh this weekend, with play in Canton, Ohio beginning at 1:00 PM on Saturday.
