LAKELAND, Fla.—Offensive woes continued to plague the Grand Valley State baseball team on Monday, as the Lakers didn't find the scoreboard until the sixth inning and were behind for most of the game in an 8-4 loss to West Chester on Monday. The matchup took place at historic Henley Field, a stadium built in 1922 which has housed several minor league teams during nearly a century of operation.
GVSU and West Chester (4-2) were scoreless through the first two frames, before the Golden Rams touched up Laker starter
Mitch Ashcraft (1-1) for three runs in the inning. That score held until the sixth inning, as West Chester starter Andrew Gernet (1-0) held the Laker offense in check. Finally, in the bottom of the sixth frame, the Lakers were able to open up the scoring, beginning with a walk by
Seth Johnson. After Johnson reached, the Lakers got a singled from
Brody Andrews and an infield single by
Matt Williams to load the bases for
Austin LaDoux. LaDoux promptly fell behind 0-2 in the count, but worked the count up to full before finding a pitch he liked and driving it to the wall in left center, scoring Johnson and Andrews.
After a Golden Rams pitching change, the Lakers caught a break when the Rams committed a fielding error on what would have been the final out of the inning, allowing
Anthony Villar to reach and Williams to come home for GVSU's third run of the game. With the Golden Rams having scored a run in the top of the inning, the score was 4-3 heading into the seventh inning, where West Chester dashed any momentum the Lakers had by adding three more runs in the top of the seventh frame and taking a 7-3 lead.
GVSU got a fourth run across in the bottom of the seventh, as
Connor Glick was hit by a pitch, advanced to third on an Andrews single and came home to score on a dropped fly ball by the Golden Rams. That was the last run the Lakers would score, and the Golden Rams tacked on one last run for good measure in the ninth to emerge victorious by an 8-4 tally.
LaDoux led the Lakers with a pair of hits and two runs driven in, while Glick and Williams each had a hit and scored a run. Ashcraft took the loss on the mount, surrendering four runs (three earned) on nine hits over 6.0 innings.
Grant Peters pitched three innings in relief of Ashcraft, yielding four runs and fanning three.
