ORLANDO, Fla.—A two hour delay didn't hold the Grand Valley State baseball team in check on Friday, as the Lakers held on in a tight 4-3 victory over regional opponent Lewis under the lights in Orlando, Florida. The sixth game of the RussMatt Invitational for the Lakers was originally slated for a late afternoon start but was delayed due to extra innings in the contests scheduled beforehand, and was won with a strong pitching effort and defense in a critical moment late in the game.
After scoring solo runs in the first and second innings in support of
Sawyer Chambers (1-0), the Lakers increased the lead to 3-0 in the sixth inning before the Flyers (0-11) pushed across a pair of their own runs to set up an interesting finish. After a scoreless seventh and eighth frame for both teams, the Lakers scored what would be the game-winning run in the top of the ninth, surviving a furious Flyer rally as the tying run was cut down at the plate after an outstanding throw from center field by
Alex Young. The play was the final out the Lakers needed to earn the victory on a day when offense was at a premium.
Chambers earned the win on the mound by pitching five solid innings, allowing three hits, walking two and striking out three. Closer
Matt Williams earned his third save by striking out two over two innings of work. At the plate, every Laker batter notched a hit, with third baseman
Austin LaDoux and right fielder
Zach Berry collecting a pair of hits each. Berry, Williams,
Connor Glick and
Johnny Nate drove in the Laker runs.
GVSU continues play at the RussMatt with a doubleheader against Seton Hill on Sunday beginning at 2:45 p.m.
