GVSU Men's Basketball Falls In GLIAC Tournament Action At Findlay, 67-59

Lakers finish campaign 16-13

The Grand Valley State men's basketball team saw its season come to an end Tuesday evening in GLIAC Tournament action at Findlay with a 67-59 loss. The Lakers, who close the 2016-17 campaign 16-13 overall, will say goodbye to three outstanding seniors in Trevin Alexander, Luke Ryskamp and Juwan Starks

The opening half was closely contested with six lead changes and three ties as neither team led by more than five points and that lead was 8-3 in favor of the Oilers in the opening two minutes. In the final 14 minutes of the first half both Grand Valley State and Findlay built leads of three points. Following the opening three-pointer of the game from Ryskamp, GVSU's next lead came at the 10:36 mark when Starks scored on a layup to put the Lakers up 17-16. Junior guard Myles Miller scored in the paint to up the Laker lead to 19-16.

Trading buckets and the lead over the final five minutes of the first half, junior guard Chris Dorsey scored four consecutive points of the half to give GVSU a 30-27 lead. GVSU opened the second half with a three-pointer from Alexander and a dunk from Dorsey to take a 35-27 lead with 19:24 left.  However, a 14-6 run by the Oilers tied the game for the fifth time at 41-41 with 14:04 left. Following a Findlay three-pointer, Starks tied the game at 44 with a three of his own and Alexander tied the game for the seventh time (49-49) with a jumper in the paint at the 8:21 mark.

Findlay built a 60-55 lead with 3:19 remaining, but Alexander chipped the lead down to three (60-57) with a layup. The GVSU defense got a couple of stops and gave the offense a couple of good looks, but the shots did not fall and the Oilers converted seven free throws in the final 1:44 to preserve the win.

The game was as evenly contested as possible with both teams converting 23 shots from the floor, including seventh each from three-point land. Findlay held a 37-35 rebounding advantage, but the deciding advantage came from the charity stripe where UF was 14-for-19 and GVSU was just 6-of-8.

Starks led the way for the Lakers with 16 points, hitting 4-of-6 from three-point land. Alexander scored 11 points and pulled down seven rebounds, while Ryskamp scored nine points and pulled down three boards. Sophomore Justin Greason and Dorsey each scored eight points, while Zach West pulled down eight rebounds.

Taren Sullivan led Findlay with 19 points and 12 rebounds, followed by 16 from Martyce Kimbrough and 15 from Elijah Kahlig.
