GVSU Takes Down Lewis At Home, 66-52

The Lakers sank 14-16 free throws in the contest

The Grand Valley State women's basketball team earned their fourth straight win with a 66-52 victory over the Flyers of Lewis on Sunday (Nov. 19) afternoon inside GVSU Fieldhouse Arena. GVSU opened up a 24-11 lead after the first quarter before outscoring the Flyers 13-11 in the second quarter to take a 37-22 lead into halftime.  GVSU kept their foot on the gas in the third quarter, outscoring Lewis 14-12, before scoring 15 more in the fourth quarter to coast to a victory. The Lakers are now 4-0 on the season, their third 4-0 start in the last four seasons, while the Flyers drop to 2-2.

GVSU made 10 three-pointers in the contest, including shooting 7-19 in the first half, while holding Lewis to just three three's in 17 attempts. The Lakers also capitalized off of Lewis turnovers, as GVSU scored 22 points following a Flyer turnover, while Lewis scored just five points off of Laker losses.

The Lakers were sent to the line eight times throughout the game and made sure to take advantage of the freebies, shooting 14-16 (87.5%) from the charity stripe. GVSU also pulled down 38 rebounds as a team, while also collecting 12 assists, five blocks, and committing just seven turnovers compared to the Flyers 13. On the game, GVSU shot 33.9% from the field and 28.6% from beyond the arc.

Sophomore guard Jenn DeBoer led the Lakers in scoring for the second time this season, as she put up 17 points on 5-15 shooting, including sinking four triples. DeBoer also corralled eight rebounds (6 defensive, 2 offensive) and picked up three assists as well. On the season, DeBoer is averaging 14.8 points, as she has scored in double-digits in every game so far. Fellow starting guard Natalie Koenig was tied for the second most points scored by a Laker, as she picked up 13 to go along with her team-high five assists and three steals. Koenig is currently leading the Lakers in scoring this season, averaging 15.3 points per game.

The Lakers also got solid play out of their bigs, as Korynn Hincka scored 13 points, Taylor Parmley scored 12 points, and Cassidy Boensch picked up four points. Hincka picked up a team-high nine rebounds, while Boensch pulled down seven herself and both of them tallied two rejections.

The Lakers jumped out to an early 8-0 lead as Hincka got things started with a three-pointer just 20 seconds into the contest and followed it up with a jumper just 30 seconds later. Koenig capped off the run with a three-pointer herself at the 8:05 mark. The teams traded buckets until GVSU took a 16-9 lead on a DeBoer triple at the 3:43 mark and proceeded to outscore the Flyers 8-2 in the final minutes of the first quarter to take a 24-11 lead.

Lewis got the scoring started in the second quarter with a jumper from Jessica Kelliher, which was quickly answered with another DeBoer three-pointer. Two made free throws and a jumper from Lewis brought the score to 29-17 at the 7:00 minute mark but two made free throws from DeBoer pushed the Laker lead back to 14 with just over 5:30 left to play in the half. GVSU took advantage of some Flyer fouls, as GVSU sandwiched a Boensch layup with made free throws from Koenig and Belke. A three from the Flyers with 1:53 left would be the last points scored in the half and GVSU would go into the break with a 37-22 lead.

Once again, Lewis opened the third quarter scoring with a layup from Kelliher, which was quickly answered with a Hincka bucket with 8:55 left to play. The Flyers started to chip away at the Laker lead and two made free throws at the 2:31 mark brought the score to 51-34 in favor of the Lakers. Those buckets would be the last scoring of the quarter as both defenses stepped up the last two and a half minutes as the next eight shots wouldn't find the bottom of the net.

Both teams would go almost a full minute without scoring to open up the fourth quarter but a three-pointer from DeBoer ended the drought and pushed the GVSU lead to 20 points at 54-34. The Flyers used a four point run just 40 seconds later to pull within 16 points at 54-36. Lewis hit a few shots in a row and shrunk the Laker lead to 58-45 with just under six and a half minutes left to play. A Parmley layup was sandwiched between two made buckets for Lewis at the 1:00 minute mark to bring the score to 63-50 but GVSU would hit a couple of free throws to keep the Flyers at bay and take the 66-52 victory.

The Lakers will take a few days off for Thanksgiving before traveling down to Louisville, Ky. for a neutral site matchup against Southern Indiana on Saturday, Nov. 25 before taking on Bellarmine in a true road game the following day. Saturday's matchup is set to tipoff at 1:00 PM while Sunday's game is set to start at 3:00 PM.
