Lakers Drop Close Contest at Michigan Tech After Anderson’s Late Bucket, 49-48

HOUGHTON, Mich.—In a game that stayed close throughout, it was inevitable that Thursday evening's game between Michigan Tech and the Grand Valley State women's basketball game would come down to the wire. As expected, the game ended in dramatics, as Tech's Morgan Anderson scored on a jumper with 0.7 seconds remaining left to lift the Huskies to a 49-48 victory at SDC Gymnasium on Thursday.

Anderson netted a game high 22 points, hitting three-straight go-ahead baskets in the final 1:09 of play to counter baskets by the Lakers. Altogether, the game featured 18 lead changes and nine ties, as neither team could build up a decisive lead through the entire game. Thursday's loss was reminiscent of last season's regular season matchup, a game which Michigan Tech also won on a last second shot by the now departed Danielle Blake.

Kayla Dawson and Bailey Cairnduff each scored 10 points for GVSU, as the team shot 38.8 percent (19-49) from the field and 2-15 (13.3 percent). The Lakers drop to 13-5 (8-4 GLIAC) with the loss.

The Lakers took a one-point lead on a Piper Tucker layup with 3:26 left in the fourth quarter, going up 44-43. After missed shots by both sides dwindled the clock down, Anderson hit the first of her three go-ahead buckets with 1:09 remaining to put the Huskies up 45-44. After Laker guard Janae Langs countered with a layup of her own on the other end, Anderson scored once more with just 14 seconds left to put Michigan Tech up, 47-46.

Going the other way after the basket was GVSU, who got another layup from Tucker with six seconds left after a Huskies foul. That left about four seconds for Michigan Tech, which was just enough time for Anderson to hit a fading baseline jumper with very little time remaining on the clock. An inbounds pass with less than a second remaining led to a final desperation three-pointer from Lindsay Baker, but the shot was no good, and the Huskies survived at home to eke out the win.

Similar to last season's matchups between the two teams, Thursday's night game was one in which points were at a premium, and scoring was lower than average for both teams. Grand Valley State led by just two points, 12-10, after the first quarter of play, and would see that lead halved heading into the halftime break after being outscored by the home team 9-8 in the second quarter.

In the third quarter, the Lakers were able to gain some distance from the home side, building up a seven point lead by embarking on a 9-0 run. Trailing by two points, GVSU got layups by Taylor Lutz, Langs and Tucker on consecutive possessions . Cairnduff then capped off the run with an old-fashioned three point play, bringing the score to 31-24 with 4:19 left to play. The Huskies struck back, however, scoring nine straight points to go up back up by two points, 33-31, with 1:11 left. After a Cairnduff triple to put GVSU up 34-33, Anderson ended the quarter with a jumper to put her team up by one heading into the final frame.

Both teams would score 14 points in the final quarter, as Anderson's six consecutive points were able to stave off the Lakers in the final seconds.

Next up for the Lakers is a Saturday afternoon matinee against Northern Michigan in Marquette. The Wildcats (13-6) were 66-42 winners over Ferris State on Thursday.
