Grand Valley State Claims 2015-16 Learfield Sports Directors' Cup With A Record 1,070 Points

Lakers win 11th all-time Directors' Cup

The National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics (NACDA) announced today that Grand Valley State University captured the 2015-16 Learfield Directors' Cup with a single-season record 1,070 points in the maximum number of 14 sports (7 men/7 women). Grand Valley State will be honored at the 2016 NACDA Convention during the Learfield Directors' Cup Awards Luncheon on Tuesday, June 14 in Dallas, Texas.

Grand Valley State has now won three consecutive Directors' Cup titles and 11 in the last 13 years. The Lakers have also finished among the top two in the final standings each of the last 15 years. GVSU outdistanced second place St. Leo (Fla.) (723.5) by 346.5 points. UC San Diego finished third with 646 points, followed by California Baptist in fourth (611.25) and Minnesota State in fifth (595.5).

The Learfield Sports Directors' Cup trophy, which is commonly known as the all-sports trophy, is presented to the top athletic department in the country. The scoring system is based on the national finishes of seven men's and seven women's sports. 

The Lakers scored 353.0 points in the fall, followed by 387 points in the winter and 330 in the spring. GVSU scored points in 19 sports (11 women/8 men), dropping the points scored (195) by five teams. The Lakers recorded 11 top five finishes, highlighted by a National Championship in women's soccer. In addition, GVSU second in women cross country, third in football, women's basketball, women's indoor track & field, fourth in men's cross country, women's golf, men's outdoor track & field, women's outdoor track & field and fifth in women's swimming & diving and men's indoor track & field. 

"This is an accomplishment that really reflects on the quality of the student-athletes, coaches and support staff we have at Grand Valley State," said athletic director, Tim Selgo. "Not only did our student-athletes perform well competitively, 64 percent of them achieved a 3.0 GPA or better during this past semester.  I am so proud of how our teams competed throughout the year, while also achieving at a high level in the classroom," added Selgo. 

The Laker women scored a total of 761 points in 11 sports, counting 588 points towards the Directors' Cup in seven sports. The Lakers averaged 84.0 points in seven women's sports. The GVSU men scored 504 total points in eight sports, counting 482 points for the Directors' Cup. The men averaged 68.8 points in seven sports. Fourteen GVSU athletic teams finished among the top 10 nationally and the Lakers averaged 76.4 points per sport in the 14 counted towards the Directors' Cup.

In addition, Grand Valley State student-athletes were able to get it done in the classroom as well as on the playing field. The Lakers are coming off another stellar academic year in which nearly 64.0 percent of the student-athletes recorded a GPA of 3.0 or higher. 

Grand Valley State University also claimed the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) 2015-16 Presidents' Trophy for the 18th consecutive year and  a GLIAC-best 23rd time overall. The Presidents' Trophy, commonly referred to as the All-Sports Trophy, is awarded at the end of each year of competition to the conference member having demonstrated general excellence in all or most sports. The Presidents' Trophy is designed to promote well-rounded athletic programs within each member institution.
