XENIA, Ohio—A cold, windy day in a must win situation in Xenia, Ohio at the 2016 GLIAC Tournament proved to be no trouble at all for Grand Valley State's
Zach Anderson, who pitched 7.2 scoreless innings to lead the Lakers to a 4-0 shutout victory over Walsh University. With the win, the Lakers secure their spot in the championship game for the sixth straight season, as they will face the winner of a Hillsdale-Walsh matchup for a chance at their 12
th tournament title.
The Lakers (34-16-1) and the Cavaliers (28-25) were locked in a pitchers duel early on, as neither team could score for the first three innings. Anderson was locked in from the start, dispatching the Cavaliers with ease from the onset, only to be matched for a short while by Walsh starter Seth Robinson.
The stalemate was finally broken by third baseman
Anthony Villar, who hit a deep sacrifice fly in the fourth to score
Josh Smith for the first run of the game. The RBI was Villar's seventh of the day, following his six RBI performance in the morning game against Wayne State.
Seth Johnson then hit a two run home run to deep center field, his third big fly of the season, to score
Matt Williams and give the Lakers a 3-0 lead.
In the fifth inning, the Lakers added an insurance run when
Matt Williams drove in
Alex Young with an RBI groundout to make the score 4-0.
The Laker battery of Anderson and Glick continued to surge on, and did not run into a jam until the top of the eighth, when a hit, an error and a hit batter loaded the bases with two outs for the Cavaliers. Laker closer
Matt Williams then came on in relief of Anderson, getting out of the jam by inducing a foul-out.
Williams came back out to pitch in the ninth, and set down the Cavaliers in order to pick up his 19
th save due to his efforts in the eighth. Williams continues to improve upon the single season save record, which was previously 16 saves before Williams broke it with his opening GLIAC Tournament save against Hillsdale. At 29 career saves, he moves into second on GVSU's career saves list, and now stands just 10 away from Brad Zambron's 39 career saves.
Andersons line marked his second shutout outing of the season. He scattered seven hits over 7.2 innings, walking one and striking out three. He threw just 91 pitches while improving his season record to 5-5 overall.
Smith went four for four at the plate on the day, while also scoring a run. Johnson had a pair of hits, including the home run, and drove in a pair of runs while scoring one, Williams had a hit, a run score and a run batted in.
GVSU will await the winner of the Hillsdale-Walsh matchup on Sunday morning to face in the Tournament Championship game shortly thereafter. Hillsdale reached the championship with a come from behind 9-6 victory over Malone immediately prior to the Laker's defeat of Walsh. Counting tournament games, GVSU is 5-0 vs. Hillsdale in matchups this season, and 4-1 vs. Walsh.
