Lakers Win Pair of Doubleheader Games, Complete Series Sweep of Hillsdale

ALLENDALE, Mich.—The Grand Valley State baseball team completed a four game sweep of Hillsdale College on Sunday, one-upping last weekend's four game sweep with one even more impressive. The Lakers bested their GLIAC North Division rivals 11-3 and 6-4 on Sunday, bringing their record on the week to a perfect 8-0 and clinching the North Division Crown.

The Lakers face a quick turnaround, playing host to a rescheduled doubleheader against Wayne State on Wednesday. The games were originally set to be played on Sunday, April 10th, but were postponed due to inclement weather. Those games are set for a 1:00 p.m start at GVSU Baseball Field.

GVSU (28-12-1) torched the hapless Hillsdale pitching on Sunday, collecting nine hits in the first game and 10 in the nightcap on their way to 17 runs.

Meanwhile, the Lakers pitching staff was excellent on the weekend, limiting the GLIAC's most dynamic offensive to less than four runs in all four games, and just a .280 team average in the four games. Hillsdale, who came into the matchup with a GLIAC leading 50 home runs on the season, managed just three long balls.

In the first game, the Lakers got staked out to an early 1-0 lead in the second inning, as Connor Glick doubled to center field to score Anthony Villar, who had walked and scored from first on the base knock.

After Hillsdale went down 1-2-3 in the top of the third, the Lakers got their offense moving in a big way, scoring four more runs. After Johnny Nate and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt, Jason Ribecky also walked to put two men aboard for Matt Williams, who singled down the left field line to plate Nate. After Hillsdale mishandled a slow chopper hit by Villar, Ribecky came home on the play to make the score 3-0. With men on the corners, Glick was hit by a pitch, loading the bases. Josh Griffith then doubled to left center, scoring Villar and Williams to put GVSU ahead 5-0.

After Hillsdale got three straight singles off of GVSU starter Zach Anderson to start the fourth, the Lakers worked out of the jam, yielding just one run on a fielder's choice. Anderson (4-4) would go the distance for Grand Valley State, allowing three runs on six hits, walking three and striking out three in earning his fourth win.

The Lakers struck again in the bottom of the fourth, scoring three runs to make the score 8-1. Alex Young led off with an infield single to third base, advanced to second on a single by Jason Ribecky and came around to score on a single by Williams to left field. After a lineout to right field doubled off Williams at first, Glick launched his first home run of the season over the fence in left center to score Ribecky, getting the Laker lead to seven runs.

After Hillsdale answered with a two run home run of their own in the top of the fifth to cut the lead to 8-3, the Lakers would strike again in the bottom of the sixth inning.

After Ribecky led off with a walk, he advanced to second on a passed ball, and was joined tow outs later by Glick, who also walked. Griffith then delivered again with an RBI single to right center to score Ribecky and make the score 9-3. After Zach Berry drew a pinch hit walk, the bases were loaded for Joel Schipper, the walk off hero from the day before. Schipper's single to right field plated Griffith and Glick, bringing the score to the final margin of 11-3.

Glick and Griffith each had a big day for the Lakers, as each drove in three runs apiece. Glick had a pair of hits and a pair of runs score, while Griffith had a pair of hits and one run scored. Williams had a pair of hits and two runs driven in, while Schipper added a hit and two RBI.

In game two of the twinbill, the Lakers faced an early 1-0 deficit, as GLIAC batting leader Luke Ortel singled and later came around to score for the Chargers. That 1-0 lead would stick for two innings before the Lakers took hold of the game in the bottom of the third inning.

Catcher Brody Andrews got the party started with a deep double to left center, then advanced to third on a groundout. Center fielder Alex Young then plated Andrews with a single to right center to tie the game. After Young stole second, he came around to score on an RBI single by Ribecky. Ribecky himself was then brought home one batter later by Villar, who doubled down the line on the first pitch he saw, giving the Lakers a 3-1 lead. The next batter, Williams, then smoked a first pitch fastball to left field, where it hit high off the fence for a double, scoring Villar and giving the Lakers a 4-1 lead.

After an RBI single by Hillsdale cut the lead to 4-2, GVSU would strike back in the bottom of the fifth inning. Young singled to lead off the inning, then stole second to get into scoring position. Glick then came aboard on a hit by pitch, and both Young and Glick came around to score on a Williams double to left center, with Glick legging it out from first base to score and make the Laker lead four runs again, 6-2.

The teams then exchanged three scoreless frames, bringing up the ninth inning as the Lakers held onto a four run lead. After a one out single got Hillsdale a runner, Ortel knocked the first pitch he saw from Brett Nearing over the right field wall, cutting the lead to just two runs, 6-4. Unfortunately for the Chargers, that opened the door for a save situation by Laker closer Matt Williams, who got two groundouts to end the threat and earn his 15th save of the season.

Mitch Ashcraft (2-0) earned the win on the mound for GVSU, tossing 6.2 innings. He surrendered two runs on nine hits, walking one and striking out four. Tim Tarter pitched 1.1 scoreless innings in relief, while Nearing pitched 1/3 of an inning.

In addition to his pitching contributions, Williams added three hits, including two doubles, and drove in three runs. Young had two hits, two runs score, one run driven in and two stolen bases, giving him 20 on the season. Villar and Ribecky each had a hit and an RBI.
