Offense Paces Lakers to Pair of Sunday Victories, Cap Weekend Sweep of Findlay

FINDLAY, Ohio—After winning two low scoring games against the University of Findlay on Saturday, the Grand Valley State baseball team exploded for 22 runs and 29 hits in Sunday's doubleheader, as the Lakers defeated the Oilers 9-4 and 13-6. With the wins, the Lakers earn their first 4-0 GLIAC series win this season, and improve to 15-5 in the GLIAC this season, and 24-12-1 overall.

The Lakers struck first in the first game, as Connor Glick walked, advanced to second on a groundout and came around to score on an Oiler error for a 1-0 lead in the third inning.

After the teams exchanged scoreless frames, the Oilers struck back in the fourth inning, hitting  a three run homer off of Laker starter Tim Tarter to pull ahead of the Lakers, 4-1.

That lead wouldn't last, however, as the Lakers offense awoke in the top of the sixth inning in a big way. After the Lakers got three consecutive singles from Joel Schipper, Johnny Nate and Alex Young to load the bases, senior Jason Ribecky unloaded a grand slam to clear the bases and put the Lakers back on top, 5-4. Ribecky's fourth long fly was his fourth of the season, but that wasn't it for the Lakers in the inning. After GVSU loaded the bases again, Nick Schultz hit a single to center field to score Anthony Villar and Connor Glick. Schipper then hit an RBI single to center field to score Matt Williams, and Schultz came around to score on a Nate sacrifice bunt to the Oiler's pitcher to get the Lakers their eighth run in the inning, and a 9-4 lead.

Tarter pitched five innings, allowing four runs on six hits and striking out three, and picked up his sixth win of the season (6-1) after the Lakers scored eight runs in the top of the sixth to give him some run support. Brett Nearing came on in relief for the Lakers pitching one inning of relief.

Ribecky led GVSU with three hits and four runs driven in. Nick Schultz had a pair of RBI, while Schipper and Nate each score a run, drove in another and had two hits.  Glick walked three times and scored twice.

In the nightcap,  the Lakers jumped out to an early 5-0 lead in support of starter Mitch Ashcraft. Grand Valley State scored one run in the first inning, one in the third, three in the fourth and six in the fifth inning to go up 11-0 over the Oilers.

The Oilers would score a pair of runs in the sixth, and another four in the eighth in response to a pair of late Laker runs, but the final margin would be 13-6 and a comfortable win for the Lakers to end the series.

Ashcraft (1-0) earned the win on the mound for Grand Valley State, pitching six innings and allowing two runs on three hits, walking one and striking out three. Four Laker pitchers made relief appearances for the Lakers (Brett Nearing, Michael Battistelli, Reid Kelley and Zach Anderson).

On offense, the Lakers were led by the efforts of Alex Young, who had an RBI double and a bases clearing triple on his way to a three hit, five RBI day. He also added two steals and scored a run. Josh Griffith had three hits and drove in three runs for GVSU, while Keith Browning had a pair of hits and a pair of runs driven in.

The Lakers return to action at home against Hillsdale on Saturday, April 30th at GVSU Baseball Field.
