ALLENDALE, Mich. – #8 Grand Valley State was in control of today's game from the opening whistle as the Lakers cruised to a 15-4 victory over the visiting Indianapolis Greyhounds. The Lakers improve to 4-3 overall and 2-0 against conference competition with the win, moving them into second-place in the GLIAC.
With three goals and two assists,
Ryan Skomial led the offense in today's GLIAC game, while
Erika Neumen and
Kira Dosenberry each tallied a hat trick with three goals, and
Meghan Datema tallied two goals and assist for three points. Leading both teams in assists was
Chelsey Bishop, as the sophomore dished out three on the afternoon.
Neumen and
Kelly Leibovitz led the quad with four ground balls each, Datema notched up four of the team's nine draw control wins, and Neumen and
Caitlin Wojichowski led a Laker defense that caused 16 turnovers with three and two caused turnovers, respectively.
Sarah Zwilsky earned her fourth win of the season by making five saves in the first 30 minutes of the game.
Brianna DeMilia also made an appearance in today's game, making one save in 30 minutes between the pipes.
Grand Valley State built a healthy lead with the first five goals of the contest, coming off the sticks of Neumen, Dosenberry, Skomial and Datema before UIndy was able to stop the run for a moment at 12:42. GVSU would keep the Greyhounds off the board for the remainder of the half while putting another five past the Indianapolis goalkeeper. Another round of goals from Neumen, Skomial, Datema and Dosenberry, and a strike from
Danielle Tunnell just before the half gave GV a 10-1 lead.
Ashley Bailey buried a pass from Bishop 40 seconds into the start of the second half to put the Lakers up 10 as goals from Dosenberry and
Carolyn Kraus gave GVSU a 13-1 advantage before the Greyhounds snuck two past DeMilia to make it a 10-goal game.
Carlyn Shisler tickled the twine with 14:11 off a free-position attempt to make it an 11-goal advantage, but the Greyhounds put one back two minutes later. Skomial scored the day's final goal off a free-position attempt at 6:31, and the Lakers ran out the clock to preserve their second GLIAC win of the season.
GVSU held an advantage over Indianapolis in nearly all statistical catagories. The Lakers outshot the Greyhounds (40-12), picked up more ground balls (26-17), and committed fewer turnovers (16-28). The Lakers were also impressive on clears, going 18-19 while limiting their opponents to just 11 out of 23 successful clears.
Tiffin (4-4, 2-1 GLIAC) will be the next opponent for Grand Valley State, as the two teams square off on Friday (Apr. 1) at 6 pm at GVSU Lacrosse Stadium.
