Lakers Score Early, Defeat #15 University of Indianapolis 3-1

WESTFIELD, Ind.—The Grand Valley State baseball team used a three run first inning to take control early in Saturday's game against the 15th ranked University of Indianapolis, and never relinquished the lead, earning a 3-1 victory in day one of the Midwest Regional Baseball Crossover in Westfield, Indiana.

The Lakers improve to 8-6-1 on the season, and return to action at the Crossover on Sunday with a 10:30 a.m game against Drury, and another 1:30 game, against Missouri S &T, later in the day.

Jason Ribecky hit a two RBI triple in his first at bat, the first triple of his career, to bring in Matt Williams and Josh Smith, and catcher Connor Glick followed that with an RBI single to drive in Ribecky, as the Lakers jumped out to an early 3-0 lead.

The Greyhounds would add a run in the next inning, but that would be their only score of the game. GVSU's Kyle Lawson was effective on the mound, pitching seven strong innings and giving up one unearned run on five hits. He walked three and struck out four.

Tim Tarter and Matt Williams pitched scoreless eighth and ninth innings, respectively, with Williams earning his third save of the season and striking out two.

Josh Smith had two hits and a run scored for GVSU, which had eight team hits. Keith Browning had a hit and two stolen bases on the day.
