Lakers Take Down Huskies in GLIAC Quarterfinal in Overtime, 65-63

GVSU wins in Houghton for first time since 2006-07 season

HOUGHTON, Mich.—In the end, Grand Valley State's final game against the Michigan Tech Huskies was every bit as close and hard fought as the most previous. So close, in fact, that the game could not be settled in four quarters, and it would be settled in overtime as the Lakers won, 65-63, for the first time in Houghton since the 2006-07 season. It was also the first overtime game for the Lakers this season.

The loss snaps Michigan Tech's GLIAC tourney quarterfinal winning streak at 9. Prior to tonight, Michigan Tech's last quarterfinal loss was in 2005-06, to LSSU. It also snaps Michigan Tech's 12 game winning streak in the SDC Gym in GLIAC womens basketball tourney action. The Huskies last tournament loss at home was 2008-09 GLIAC title game.

Bailey Cairnduff had 18 for the Lakers, while her teammate Kayla Dawson had 16. Piper Tucker compiled a double-double with 11 points and 11 rebounds.

The game was close throughout, beginning in the third quarter, as Tech briefly held a five point lead, but the teams ended the first quarter with the Huskies up by just one point, 16-15.

In the second quarter, the Lakers outscored the Huskies 15-13, briefly entertaining a three point lead with four and half minutes left in the quarter when Cairnduff hit a triple. The two teams would trade buckets back and forth for a few minutes, before Taylor Lutz closed out the half with a layup to put Grand Valley up 30-29.

After a basket by Tech to open the third quarter, Carinduff struck again with an old-fashioned three point play with 8:45 left to play in the third. The Huskies then scored eight straight points to seize a six point lead to go up 39-33 with seven minutes remaining in the quarter. Tech would later extend that lead to eight with just over three minutes left to play in the third quarter, before the Lakers went on a run of their own, closing out the quarter with eight straight points to tie the game up  at 44 apiece heading into the fourth quarter.

The Lakers would open the fourth quarter with a Cairnduff triple, a layup from Piper Tucker and a layup from Janae Langs, opening up a quick 51-44 lead with under eight minutes left in the quarter. Tech refused to go away, however, sandwiching a layup between two triples on three consecutive possessions, and closing out the 10-0 run with another layup with four minutes left. GVSU would get a pair of free throws from Taylor Parmley to cut the lead to one point, 54-53, and Cairnduff would later hit a triple to put the Lakers up by two with three minutes left in the period.

After Tech went up by one point off of a Danielle Blake layup with two minutes left, Grand Valley's Kayla Dawson would make a layup of her own with 34 seconds left to put the Lakers up by one point yet again. With just five seconds left, Blake had a pair of free throw opportunities, with her team down by one. She hit the first free throw to tie the game at 58, but her second did not fall, sending the game into overtime.

In the overtime period, the teams would trade layups to open play, tying the game a 60-60. After both teams struggled to score for the next three minutes, Piper Tucker would hit a layup with 1:19 left in overtime, which would be matched by a layup from Tech's Kylie Moxley with 18 seconds left to tie the score at 62-62. Moxley's free throw would put the Huskies up by one, and the Lakers would call a timeout to regroup. Coming out of the timeout, Janae Langs would hit a triple with just eight seconds left, a decisive shot that put the Lakers up for good, 65-63. After calling a timeout of their own, Tech would turn the ball over and time would run out, giving the Lakers the huge victory on the least friendly of courts.

After the teams scoring was remarkably similar from quarter to quarter, it would be just a small two point margin n overtime that would prove decisive. Overall, the Lakers shot just 41 percent (23-56) from the field, and the Huskies just 39 percent (24-61). The Lakers had a good day shooting from deep, hitting 8-15 shots (53.3 percent) from beyond the arc, compared to just 33.3 percent (7-21) for Michigan Tech.

Moxley and Mackenzie Perrtu led the Huskies with 18 points each, while Blake finished with 11 points.

The Lakers will now advance to a rematch versus Saginaw Valley State, the #2 seed, hosted at Ashland University. The Cardinals ended up with wins against the Lakers in both matchups this season, erasing double digit Laker leads in both to come away with victories. The game is set for Saturday, with tip-off time yet to be determined.
