The Grand Valley State men's basketball team closed the 2015-16 campaign Tuesday night with a 67-58 loss at 10th-ranked Ashland in a GLIAC Tournament quarterfinal contest. GVSU closes the season with an 18-11 record and will lose the services of four seniors (
Chaz Rollins,
Ricardo Carbajal,
Aaron Hayes and
Darren Kapustka). Ashland advances to the GLIAC Tournament semifinals with a 25-4 mark.Â
GVSU led for most of the opening 10 minutes as four Lakers hit the scoring column. Senior guard
Aaron Hayes chipped in seven points, followed by six points from senior forward
Ricardo Carbajal, a three-pointer from senior guard
Darren Kapustka and a three from junior guard
Luke Ryskamp to give the Lakers a 19-17 lead. Ashland, the hottest team in the Midwest Region who has now won 13 consecutive games, outscored the Lakers 17-5 over the final 8:04 of the first half to take a 36-24 lead into the lockerroom after 20 minutes of action.Â
Ryskamp hit a short jumper to open the second half and Hayes hit a free throw and a three-pointer to pull GVSU within 10 (41-31) with 17:03 left. Neither team scored until the 13:38 mark, but it was the start of a 7-0 run by the Eagles that upped the lead to 48-31. Ashland led 53-35 when the Lakers began to claw back into the game. Chaz Rollins hit a pair from the charity stripe and added a layup. Junior forward
Trevin Alexander scored four consecutive points to cut the lead down to 12 (55-43). Â Alexander hit a three-pointer to pull GVSU within 10 (64-54), but just 54 ticks remained in the game. Hayes scored the final two points for the Lakers to cut the lead down to nine (67-58).Â
Hayes and Alexander led GVSU with 14 points each, while Carbajal added 10. Rollins pulled down a game-high 12 rebounds and scored eigh points, while Ryskamp added seven points and nine rebounds. GVSU outrebounded Ashland 45-27, but the Eagles turned the ball over just eight times compared to the Lakers' 16. Ashland outscored GVSU 24-8 in points off turnovers.
Four Eagles reached double figures led by 20 points from Aaron Cook. Michael Hundley blocked 10 shots and Wendal Davis recorded a double-double with 12 points and 10 rebounds.Â
