Day One RecapÂ
TIFFIN, Ohio – Grand Valley State track & field dominated the field in the two-day 2016 GLIAC Indoor Track & Field Championships, cruising to victory for both the men and the women at the Hemiger Center on the campus of Tiffin University.

The second-ranked women scored 172 points to take their 17th straight conference title. The Lakers held a wide margin over second-place Hillsdale, topping them 172-101.5. Coming in third was Ashland with 80 points, followed by Findlay in fourth with 68 points, and Saginaw Valley State in fifth with 66 points. The rest of the top 10 finishing teams in the 2016 Championships are Wayne State (42.5 pts.) in sixth, Tiffin (35.5 pts.) in seventh, Walsh (26 pts.) in eighth, Northern Michigan (23.5 pts.) in ninth, and Malone (18 pts.) in 10th. Rounding out the rest of the team scores is Northwood (15 pts.) in 11th, Lake Erie (14 pts.) in 12th, and Ohio Dominican (1 pt.) in 13th.

Dajsha Avery scored the first points on the day for the Laker women with a fourth-place finish in the shot put by hitting a mark of 14.30m (46' 11.00").
Kathryn Mills and
Samantha Saikalis tied for sixth in the high jump by leaping 1.66m (5' 5.25'') in the final field event with GVSU competitors.

GVSU's most populated event of the day saw the Lakers walk away with four athletes earning points in the Mile.
Gina Patterson took second with a time of 4:49.55, giving her an NCAA automatic time and Women's Freshman of the Meet honors for the running events. Following Patterson in the Mile was
Kendra Foley in third (4:55.72),
Amy Creutz in fifth (5:02.97) and
Jordan Chester in sixth (5:05.35).

In the 60m final,
Beatriz Indurain nabbed gold by crossing the line in a season-best time of 8.49 seconds. Joining Indurain in grabbing points were Tiarra Wiggins in sixth with a time of 8.87 and
Breanna Luba in seventh in 8.89.

Indurain would also score points in the 60m dash, placing sixth with a time of 7.79.
Angela Ritter was the highest-placing Laker in the event by taking second with a time of 7.60. Although the sophomore tied Kierra Johnson of Wayne State, the sophomore sprinter just beat her out with a split of 7.594 to Johnson's 7.599.

In the 800m, three Lakers scored points.
Rachel Walters finished fifth with a time of 2:16.00, while
Katie Shaheen took seventh with a time of 2:17.23 and
Natalie Nelson ran the race in 2:17.50 to place eighth.

Ritter took gold in the 200m dash with a time of 24.71, while
Skylar Dantzler placed fourth with a time of 25.44.Â
Ritter also the helped the 4x400m relay team take third with a time of 3:51.64 with Jessica O'Connell, Dantlzer and Eskolunbe Puente.Â
Four Lakers placed inside the top eight in the 3000m, with Patterson (9:53.19) placing fourth,
Amy Cymerman (9:59.12) taking fifth, Foley (10:03.26) finishing sixth, and Chester (10:06.28) placing eighth.Â

Grand Valley State's men, also ranked second in the country, recorded 165.5 points to capture their seventh straight GLIAC indoor title. Tiffin scored 134.5 points over the two-day meet, finishing second as they fell 31 points short of dethroning GVSU. Hillsdale (85 pts.) took third, while Ashland (63 pts.) took fourth and Findlay (61 pts.) finished fifth. The remainder of the standings were Saginaw Valley State (57 pts.) in sixth, Walsh (22 pts.) in seventh, Lake Superior State (20 pts.) in eighth, Malone (15 pts.) in ninth, Northwood (13 pts.) in 10th, Ferris State (10 pts.) in 11th, and Lake Erie and Ohio Dominican (8 pts.) in a tie for 12th.

Tor'i Brooks finished second in the Heptathlon with a GVSU record 5141 points, and third in the high jump with a mark of 2.08m (6' 9.75'').Â
Samora Nesbitt took second in the triple jump with a school record of 15.23m (49' 11.75"), while
Chris Saikalis finished fourth in the shot put with a mark of 17.47m (57' 3.75''), and
Ryan Camp cleared 4.67m (15' 3.75'') in the pole vault to take sixth.

Ethan Barnes earned two gold medals in today's portion of the meet, making it three for the senior in addition to his first-place finish in yesterday's Distance Medley Relay. Barnes placed first in the Mile with a time of 4:18.73 and first in the 800m with a time of 1:54.98. Barnes' performance in the Championships earned him High Point Men's Athlete of the Meet honors.

Sean Wells hurdled his way to gold in the 60m hurdles by completing the race in 7.92 and placed fourth as a member of the 4x400m relay with
Lawson Bright-Mitchell,
Thomas Capers and
Odell McFarland with a time of 3:22.43.

In addition to placing fourth in the relay, Bright-Mitchell took bronze in the 60m dash with a time of 6.83. GVSU placed three runners in the top eight in the 3000m.
Bryce Bradley took second (8:12.68),
Zach Panning placed third (8:16.50), and
Kevin Black finished seventh (8:34.85).

With the conference trophies now in possession, Grand Valley State now shifts their focus to the 2016 NCAA Division II Indoor Track & Field National Championships on March 11-12 in Pittsburg, Kansas.
