The Grand Valley State men's basketball team dropped a 79-73 GLIAC road tilt Saturday night in Midland. The Lakers trailed by 16 at the half, but pulled to within two (71-69) with 2:04 left in the game. However, Northwood hit all eight of its free throws to seal the win. GVSU falls to 16-9 overall and 10-9 in GLIAC action.
The Lakers trailed by two (17-15) with 6:22 left in the opening half after
Aaron Hayes hit a 3-pointer. However, the Timberwolves outscored GVSU 23-9 to close the first half and led 40-24 at the break.
GVSU opened the second half with three consecutive 3-pointers, two from Hayes and one from
Zach West to pull within seven (40-33) with just 1:41 off the clock. Northwood upped it lead back to 10 (58-48) at the 10 minute mark, but the Lakers scored seven consecutive points (
Ricardo Carbajal layup,
Luke Ryskamp layup,
Chaz Rollins 3-point play) to pull within three (58-55) with 8:27 left.
The Timberwolves built its lead back to 10 (68-58) with just over five minutes left, but Hayes scored on a layup and hit a 3-pointer, followed by a Rollins layup to pull back within three (68-65) at the 3:31 mark. Hayes' layup pulled the Lakers back to within two (71-69) and following a pair of Northwood free throws a Ryskamp layup pulled GVSU back to withing two (73-71).
Hayes led GVSU with 18 points, while Carbajal added 15 points and Ryskamp 10. Rollins added nine points and 10 rebounds.
Trevin Alexander added nine points and West six.
