Saturday Schedule
ALLENDALE, Mich. - Fireworks were on display inside the Kelly Family Sports Center as a large variety of records fell at the hands of talented competitors at the conclusion of the first day of the GVSU Big Meet.
A total of six records were broken inside the Kelly Center Friday afternoon. Three new school records, two Big Meet records, and one facility record were set throughout the day as close to 1,200 athletes and 90 teams competed in the all-day meet. Along with the new records, a combined 36 NCAA automatic and provisional qualifying marks were hit by Laker athletes.
Setting new GVSU records were
Samora Nesbitt,
Wuoi Mach, and
Lawson Bright-Mitchell. Nesbitt broke his record in the triple jump invite, where he placed third after making a leap of 14.82m (48' 7.50"). Good for a provisional standard, Nesbitt's mark breaks the record of 14.79m set by Tendo Lukwago in 2013. Mach set a new time in the Mile in a second-place finish at 4:06.42, earning him a provisional mark. His time breaks the previous record of 4:07.55 set in 2006 by Nate Peck. Bright-Mitchell broke the oldest record of the three in the 60m dash, where the redshirt freshman finished second with a time of 6.81. Nabbing the provisional time, Bright-Mitchell narrowly bettered the original record of 6.83 set by Scott Mackey in 2002.
Brittany Smith of Nike set a new Big Meet and Kelly Family Sports Center record in the shot put, hitting a mark of 18.57m (60' 11.25"), smashing the record of 17.13m previously held by Adriane Blewitt in both areas. The second and final Big Meet record to fall today as in the men's triple jump, where Rex Parker of KMSOP jumped 15.22m (49' 11.25") to topple the original mark of 15.13m made by Douglas Palacious in 2013.
The highlight of the non-record breakers from Grand Valley State was
Kendra Foley in the women's Mile. The junior completed the course in a time of 4:48.36, coming 5.34 seconds short of being the fourth Laker to break a school record on the day. The 2015 All-Midwest Region honoree in the event, Foley's finish was good for
an automatic spot in the 2016 National Championships in Kansas and a fourth-place in today's meet.
