Senior guard Aaron Hayes got in the scoring column early with a layup and junior guard Luke Ryskamp hit an early three-pointer to give the Lakers a 5-2 lead. Hayes added a pair of free throws and Ricardo Carbajal hit a free throw and a layup to give GVSU a 10-3 lead at the 14:48 mark. Ferris State hit three consecutive thrree-pointers to pull ahead 14-12 and from that point on the teams traded buckets until the three minute mark of the first half. FSU built a 40-32 lead, but Chaz Rollins hit a shot at the buzzer to pull GVSU within six (40-34) after 20 minutes of action.

The Lakers' scoring output for the first 9:27 of the second half was all Hayes and Rollins. Hayes then added a three-point play to put GVSU in the lead 47-44 with 15 minutes left. Senior guard Darren Kapustka was the first Laker other than Hayes and Rollins to score in the second half when his three-pointer gave GVSU a 54-51 lead with 10:33 left.

Rollins put the Lakers up 61-60 with a free throw at the 6:04 mark and GVSU would remain in the lead until a FSU layup tied the game at 71-71 with 1:11 left.  GVSU was whistled for a foul with 37 seconds left and the Bulldogs split a pair of free throws to take a 72-71 lead. GVSU was unable to convert and Ferris State added a pair from the charity stripe to take a 74-71 lead. Hayes was unable to hit his three-point attempt at the buzzer for the visitors.
