Nearly 48 hours after winning a back-and-forth home game with a three-pointer in the final seconds, the Grand Valley State Lakers found themselves on the other side of that result on Saturday (Dec. 3), falling to Ohio Dominican in Allendale, 62-59. The Panthers' Michael Simon hit a corner three-pointer as time expired for the final tally of the contest, capping off a game-ending 8-0 run for the visitors.
It was the only made field goal of the game for Simon, but it was enough for Ohio Dominican to pull off the road victory and improve to 5-2 overall and 1-1 in GLIAC play. The Lakers drop to 5-4 on the season and 1-1 in league action.
Against Findlay on Thursday night, GVSU trailed 58-52 with 5:48 remaining in the game. The Lakers scored the final nine points of that win, including
Luke Ryskamp's game-winning three-pointer with 2.2 seconds to go.
On Saturday, Grand Valley State found itself in front 59-54 with 2:18 to go after a corner three-pointer from senior
Juwan Starks. However, the Panthers responded with two free throws and a game-tying trifecta with 91 seconds to go. Simon's corner three-pointer swished through the net as time expired, finishing the eight-point run for ODU, a nearly identical - yet opposite - finish for the Lakers on their home floor.
Despite the loss, GVSU had some solid individual performances, including the first collegiate double-double of 17 points and 10 rebounds for
Drake Baar. The junior center was 8-of-14 from the field and added two steals in 31 minutes of action.
Starks poured in 14 points in 26 minutes, making 6-of-11 shots and a pair of three-pointers. He added two boards, a block, and a steal. Freshman
Lance Dollison had a great effort off the bench, as well, as the rookie went a perfect 4-for-4 from the field, made all three of his three-point attempts and totaled career-highs of 11 points and six rebounds in just 18 minutes.
Ohio Dominican shot 36.4 percent at the field and was just 8-of-27 from beyond the arc, but the Panthers went 14-for-20 at the charity stripe, while GVSU was just 3-of-6 at the line. The Lakers connected at a 42.4 percent clip from the floor and were 6-of-17 from downtown.
Baar netted the first four points of the game and after another layup and a Ryskamp jumper, GVSU was on top early 11-4. The Panthers ran off an 11-0 spurt to regain the lead, one they would hold the remainder of the half. After a Dollison trifecta with 6:30 to go brought the Lakers within a point at 19-18, Ohio Dominican scored eight straight points to open a 27-18 cushion. At halftime, the visiting Panthers were ahead 33-25.
ODU shot 34.5 percent in the first half, but was 9-of-15 at the free throw line, while the Lakers shot 39.3 percent, made 3-of-10 three-pointers, and were 0-of-2 at the stripe.
In the second half, the Panthers looked as if they'd pull away, moving out to a 41-30 advantage just three minutes into the stanza. Baar scored on a layup, Starks hit a jumper, Dollison converted a layup, and Starks hit another short jumper to make it 41-38 with 14:25 to play.Â
Trailing 46-40, Grand Valley State notched 12 consecutive points, starting with a driving lefty layup from junior
Myles Miller. Dollison drilled a three-pointer and a minute later, the newcomer hit another trey that put GVSUÂ in front 48-46. Baar scored on a layup and Miller followed with a jumper to put the Lakers on top 52-46.
Starks drained a long jumper and corner three-ball in 43-second span to keep Grand Valley State in the lead at 59-54 with 2:18 to play, but those would be the team's final points in the game.
The Lakers dominated the glass on Saturday, outrebounding ODU 44-30 and 14-9 on the offensive glass. GVSU led in points in the paint (28-18) and bench points (27-17).
Miller recorded six points, five rebounds, and four assists, while Ryskamp added six points. Senior
Trevin Alexander pulled down six rebounds, despite being plagued by foul trouble.Â
Grand Valley State heads to Hillsdale on Thursday (Dec. 8) for an 8:00 p.m. start against the Chargers.
