NORTH CANTON, Ohio -- The Grand Valley State women's basketball team rallied to force overtime and pulled away from Walsh on Saturday in a 59-51 Laker victory. The hard fought win improves the Lakers to 7-2 on the season, and 3-1 in GLIAC play.
A poor shooting performance coupled with a season high 20 turnovers beleaguered the Lakers at every turn, however they avoided dropping a second consecutive game by coming alive in the fourth quarter to force the extra period.
Janae Langs led GVSU with 12 points in the victory, while
Piper Tucker notched 11 points and
Bailey Cairnduff each scored nine.
GVSU trailed 9-7 after the first quarter, and outscored Walsh 13-12 in the second frame to trail by just one point at the half, 21-20. Another seven point quarter in the third threatened to put the game out of reach for the Lakers, as they trailed by five points heading into the fourth quarter.
Instead, the Lakers came alive in the fourth, outscoring Walsh 18-13 in the frame. A layup and free throw by
Taylor Lutz tied the game up at 43-43 with 2:23 left in the game, and a
Kayla Dawson layup gave GVSU their first lead of the game, 45-43 just 33 seconds later. A Cavalier jumper tied the game again at 45-45 with one minute left to play, and after a Laker miss at the other end, a foul on Langs gave the Cavaliers two free throws attempts to take a lead over GVSU with just nine seconds left on the clock.
Fortunately for the Lakers, Walsh missed both free throws, and the game went into overtime still tied at 45 apiece. In the extra period, the Lakers went ahead from the onset, and went on a 7-2 run to take a 54-47 lead with two minutes left. Back to back layups by Walsh then cut the lead down to just three with 65 ticks left on the clock, but Langs hit a dagger three-pointer with 0:33 left to ice the game for Grand Valley State. A FT apiece from Cairnduff and Langs brought the game to the final margin of 59-51, completing the comeback victory.
GVSU finished the game at 38.9 percent (21-54) from the field, while the three-point shooting woes continued for the 16
th ranked Lakers, as they converted on just 6-23 attempts (26.1 percent). The Lakers held a slight edge in rebounding (39-37) and points off turnovers (14-13) over the Cavaliers, but were able to come away with the victory regardless.
