Laker Women Claim 86-46 Home Win Over Rochester College

Lindsay Baker led GVSU with 17 points

The Grand Valley State women's basketball team claimed an 86-46 victory over Rochester Friday night at the GVSU Arena. The Lakers improve to 2-1 on the year, while Rochester falls to 5-6. GVSU will next be in action on Friday, Nov. 25 in Puerto Rico vs. Indianapolis, followed by a meeting with defending DII National Champion Lubbock Christian on Saturday, Nov. 26.

GVSU never trailed in the contest and built a 20-8 lead after one quarter of action. Senior forward Piper Tucker scored six in the opening stanza as six reached the scoring column. The Lakers led 13-8 and went on a 7-0 scoring run to close the quarter. Rochester opened the second quarter with a bucket, but GVSU went on a 15-4 run over a six minute stretch to take a 35-14 lead. Seniors Kayla Dawson and Lindsay Baker hit a pair of three-pointers around a three by freshman guard Jen DeBoer. GVSU then closed the second quarter with a layup by freshman Cassidy Boensch and four points by Korynn Hincka to take a 41-16 lead after 20 minutes of action. 

The Laker defense limited Rochester to just 5-of-24 shooting (20.8%) and 13 turnovers in the first half. 

GVSU exploded for 34 points in the third quarter as Baker hit three from three-point land and scored 11 points in the quarter. Tucker added six points, Boensch five and DeBoer four. Baker's final three of the quarter put GVSU up 75-30. 

The Lakers held a 32-18 advantage in the paint, scored 31 points off Rochester turnovers held a 48-27 advantage in bench points. 

Baker led the way with a game-high 17 points, hitting 5-of-10 from behind the arc, while Tucker added 16 points on 7-of-10 shooting from the floor. Boensch and DeBoer each scored nine points. Hincka and Lutz each chipped in eight points. Eleven Lakers scored and recorded a rebound in the game. Rochester turned the ball over 26 times and shot just 32.1 percent from the floor.
