NORTH CANTON, Ohio—The Grand Valley State women's soccer didn't let a second game go by without a win, besting the Cavaliers of Walsh University by a 1-0 tally on Friday evening in North Canton, Ohio. The golden goal came in the 11
th minute, courtesy of senior midfielder
Marti Corby, who netted her fourth strike of the season off an assist from classmate
Jayma Martin.
With the win, the Lakers improve to 10-1-1 on the season and 5-0 in GLIAC play, and improve to 5-0 all-time versus Walsh in what will be the last regular season matchup the two teams will ever play. Walsh will be one of several schools leaving the GLIAC after this season to join the GMAC for athletics.
"This was our fourth game in seven days, so obviously we expended a lot of energy and minute two nights ago in an absolute battle against Florida Tech", said GVSU head coach
Jeff Hosler. "To come in today and play on a field that's difficult to get a rhythm on and play a team with so many players behind the ball, to get a win in that situation is a result we'll take every day."
The Lakers rebounded from Wednesday night's loss, just their fourth loss in three seasons, to achieve a season high in total passes completed and possession time recorded. Though scoring just one goal on the day, GVSU had multiple dangerous scoring chances that were not converted that would have widened the goal differential in the contest.
"We probably should have scored twice in the first ten minutes, we had good services in to players with just the keeper to beat, and missed those chances", Hosler said. "Today was all about possession, we had a season high pass count by a long shot, we came close to passing a record for my tenure fin passes and completion rate. The kids did a good job maintaining possession and not forcing shots.
Getting a win following an upset loss is an important step for the Lakers, who will surely slip from the #1 spot in the NSCAA rankings next week, but are without a doubt a dangerous team moving forward.
"I'm proud of our girls for responding well after our first loss", Hosler said. "There was a lot of emotion to get through, a lot to process in this game and we got a good result. We have a similar situation on a small field on Sunday, so we'll look to go out and execute in the same way against Lake Erie."
Defensively, the Lakers were barely challenged by the Cavaliers (6-4-1), who managed just two shots on goal against the Lakers, both from 35 or more yards out. The Lakers employed goalkeepers
Jennifer Steinaway and
Paige Pryson in the first and second half, respectively, in earning a team shutout.
Defensively, we did a very good job limiting their offensive looks", Hosler said. "Both of their shots "on goal" came from 30 yards or more out from goal."
The Lakers now travel to Painesville, Ohio for a matchup with the Lake Erie Storm (7-4), 2-1 winners over Ferris State on Friday.
