PLAINESVILLE, Ohio—The Grand Valley State women's soccer team experienced little struggle in dispatching the Lake Erie Storm for their second consecutive win of the season on Sunday, 8-0.
Gabriella Mencotti and
Clare Carlson each scored a brace of goals for GVSU (11-1-1) who improved to 6-0 in GLIAC play.
The Lakers capable offense had no trouble carving up Lake Erie's porous defense, despite the confined playing conditions offered on the Storm's Jack Britt Memorial field.
"Playing in tight space, it can be very difficult to break teams down", said GVSU head coach
Jeff Hosler. "We did that effectively in the first half, we were just missing that final shot, or that final execution in our scoring chances. Our first half pass completion total was as high as its been in any first half this year, but we didn't have much to show for it at the half."
The Lakers opened the scoring just three minutes into the game, as Mencotti took a ball played in by
Kendra Stauffer and
Marti Corby to score her 13
th goal of the season. Mencotti would double the lead right before half, as sophomore
Madz Ham found her streaking down the field and played her in for a second goal, and 14
th of the season for the junior forward.
Coming out of the half, GVSU would strike quickly, as Stauffer would net her eighth goal of the season off a combo from classmates
Jayma Martin and Corby.
Five minutes later, Grand Valley State struck again, as Carlson netted the first of her two goals on the day off of a close shot in the box set up by
Sara Stevens.
It would be 21 minutes before the Lakers would score again, but then the goals started to come fast and furious. Carlson scored her second of the game in the 74
th minute off an assist from
Lindsay Ebeling, and the Lakers scored again just 25 seconds later on freshman
Charley Campbell's second goal of the season, with the assist coming from Carlson.
A goal in the 79
th minute from Martin and another in the 84
th minute from sophomore
Tara Lierman would round out the scoring for the Lakers.
"In the second half, we were much more effective utilizing chances when we had them. It was great for us to score a lot of goals, we had some kids that needed to see themselves put the ball into the back of the net to get more confidence moving forward and playing where they are at. It was good to see us have more desire to be effective in front of goal today."
Carlson led GVSU with two goals and an assist, while Stauffer, Lierman, Martin and Campbell each had solo goals on the day. Seven different Lakers recorded assists on the day, led by Corby with two helpers.
Grand Valley State now returns to GVSU Soccer Field for a three game home slate starting with next weekends matches against Ohio Dominican and Findlay.
