ALLENDALE, Mich.-- The Grand Valley State women's soccer team suffered a painful first loss of the season at home on Wednesday night, surrendering two second half goals to Florida Tech and dropping a 2-1 decision. The loss drops GVSU to 9-1-1 on the season and snaps an eight game winning streak. Prior to tonight's loss, the Lakers last home loss was during the 2014 season, when a 0-1 loss to Ohio Dominican snapped their 69-match home unbeaten streak.Â
GVSU got on the board first in the game despite coming out sluggish in the first half. That goal came in the 30th minute as a result of a Panther's own goal, as senior
Kendra Stauffer's shot was knocked away by the Panther goalkeeper but bounced off back into the goal off of a Florida Tech defender. That gave the Lakers a 1-0 lead heading into the halftime break.Â
Florida Tech found an equalizer in the 52nd minute, as a cross in front of the goal was knocked past GVSU goalkeeper
Jennifer Steinaway by Panthers leading scorer Keira McCarthy. That goal would end the Laker's scoreless streak at 611 minutes of gameplay, which dated back to the game against Minnesota State-Mankato on September 11th.Â
The Lakers would get several near misses at a go-ahead goal in the 64th, 68th and 77th minute, including two shots that got past the Panthers goaltender but were knocked away by the crossbar. With the game still tied at 1-1, the Panthers would get a very late golden goal after a Laker turnover in front of goal. Steinaway's clear on a ball in her zone was hit right to McCarthy, who collected the ball, dribbled once and fired a shot through Steinaway's hands for the late strike.Â
Next up for the Lakers is a pair of road contests this weekend, at Walsh on Friday and at Lake Erie on Sunday.Â
