Allendale, Mich.—The Grand Valley State women's basketball team showed up in a big way on Sunday in a game against University of Findlay (10-2, 5-1 GLIAC), ending the Oiler's seven game win streak with a 75-35 win. A strong shooting effort on offense paced the Lakers, and suffocating defense on the other end sealed the day for the Lakers, who move to 9-3 on the season and 4-2 in the GLIAC.
The Lakers started the game hot beyond the arc, as they shot 5-8 from distance in the first quarter and a half of play. The Oilers, meanwhile, couldn't buy a bucket, starting the game just 2-11 (18.2 percent) from the field and quickly finding themselves on the wrong side of a 18-9 deficit at the end of one quarter.
It would only get worse for the Oilers in the second quarter, as any basket Findlay scored was matched by the Lakers, and then some. Despite the Oilers finding some rhythm on offense, the Lakers extended their lead to 13 (33-20) heading into halftime thanks to a
Taylor Lutz layup with 6 second left in the half.
Lutz was tied with
Kayla Dawson for the team lead with 18 points apiece. Lutz was 7-10 from the field and 4-6 from beyond the arc, and added seven assists and three boards. Dawson was 6-13 from the field (2-4 3 PT) to go along with six boards.
Bailey Cairnduff recorded 10 points in the contest to go along with six boards, while
Piper Tucker filled out the stat sheet with seven points, six rebounds and six assists in 30 minutes of action.
Runs can be a big part of any basketball game, and Grand Valley showed why, as the team opened the second half on a 17 point run, turning a 13 point halftime lead into a 30 point lead, putting the game well out of reach for the Oilers. Leading the charge was guard
Taylor Lutz, who began the half with a three pointer, and added a three ball and a layup on consecutive possessions later in the run.
Piper Tucker added a triple and a layup during the run as well, and the Lakers outscored Findlay 21-6 in the third quarter.
With the game well in hand in the fourth quarter, the Lakers outscored the Oilers 21-9 in the final quarter to seal the victory. The Lakers defense held the Oilers to just 24 percent shooting from the field, well below their season mark of 46 percent entering the game, and just 35 points, which is 37 points off the Oiler's average entering the contest. It is the third consecutive game in which the Lakers have held an opponent to under 40 points, and marks the third consecutive game in which the Lakers have not allowed a double digit scorer on the opposing team. Karli Bonar led the Oilers with 8 points.
Grand Valley finished 27-57 (47%) from the field in the contest, and 12-25 (48%) from beyond the arc. GVSU edged the Oilers in points in the paint (22-10), points off turnovers (12-6) and bench points (20-18). Grand Valley took the lead from the onset and lead wire-to-wire, never yielding the lead to Findlay.
The Lakers return to action on Thursday, January 7
th, when they travel to North Canton, Ohio to take on Walsh University at 5:30 pm. On Saturday, January 9
th, the Lakers will take on the Malone Pioneers in Canton, Ohio at 1 p.m.
