The Grand Valley State men's basketball team dropped an 82-74 overtime decision at Lake Superior State Thursday night in Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan. GVSU falls to 13-4 overall and 7-4 in GLIAC action, while LSSU improves to 13-4 overall and 8-3 in GLIAC action. The Lakers will host Northwood Saturday (Jan. 23) evening at 8:00 p.m.
Lake Superior State took the early lead and led 14-8, but a
Zach West triple, followed by back-to-back jumpers by
Ricardo Carbajal and
Chaz Rollins, a triple by
Luke Ryskamp and a free throw by
Aaron Hayes concluded an 11-0 run and gave GVSU a 19-14 lead with 9:58 left in the first half. GVSU held LSSU scoreless for nearly five minutes during the run. However, Lake Superior State took a 22-21 lead with a pair of free throws with 6:29 left in the opening stanza and outscored GVSU 14-6 over the final 6:09 to build a 36-27 lead after 20 minutes of play.
Lake Superior State built a 38-27 lead after a pair of free throws to open the second half, but senior forward
Chaz Rollins started a 10-0 GVSU run and pulled Lakers to within one (38-37) at the 16:05 mark. LSSU answered with a 7-0 run of its own and led 45-37 with 14:14 left in the game.
Ryskamp hit a trey, followed by a
Myles Miller jumper and a triple by
Trevin Alexander tied the score at 45-45 with 11:59 remaining. LSSU scored six quick points to up its lead to 54-48 with 8:40 left in the game.
Trailing 57-50, GVSU's
Aaron Hayes scored nine consecutive points and pulled Grand Valley State within one (60-59). Hayes continued his hot hand and put GVSU up 63-62 with a bucket in the paint at the 4:54 mark.
LSSU scored six consecutive points and led 68-63 before Alexander hit a thriple and Myles Milled tied the game at 69-69 with 15 seconss left to send the game into an extra seassion. Lake Superior State outscored GVSU 13-5 in overtime to secure the win.
Miller led GVSU with 15 points, while Hayes chipped in 12 points, Rollins 11 and Ryskamp 10. Alexander added nine points and eight rebounds. The difference in the game came at the charity stripe where Lake Superior State converted 27-of-40 free throws, while GVSU hit 8-of-14 attempts.
