The GVSU womens soccer team rebounded from a loss on Friday in true Laker fashion, scoring early and often in a 4-0 victory over Truman State on Sunday.
"I thought our girls responded really well to the challenge we put to them after Friday's performance", head coach Jeff Hosler said. "I thought we did a good job being the more aggressive team, and any time you score early, you create an advantage for your team. Scoring that early while playing the way we were really helped build our confidence in the game".
Seniors led the way for Grand Valley in the victory, as Maddison Reynolds, Katie Bounds and Katie Klunder netted three of the Grand Valley goals in the game. Reigning player of the year Marti Corby also scored for the Lakers.
"Our veteran players did a good job of setting an example of how we can play consistently", Hosler said. "I thought we found position up the field better, moved the ball better and scored four goals against a very good Truman team."
Reynolds netted the games first goal, scoring off a shot into the top corner just nine minutes and four seconds into the game. Twenty minutes later, Marti Corby received a pass from Gabriella Mencotti, beat the defense and scored on a 1 v 1 with Truman goalkeeper Katie Mattingly.
Substitute Katie Bounds was the next to find pay dirt for the Lakers, taking a pass from Sara Stevens and putting it away at the 36 minute mark.
Senior forward Katie Klunder added an insurance goal just after halftime, scoring on a strike from 30 yards out. Grand Valley held a advantage in shots during the game, 14-6.
Freshman goalkeeper Emily Maresh earned her first career shutout in goal, making one save.
The victory evens the Laker's record at 1-1 on the season, and concludes the team's road trip. Grand Valley returns to Allendale on Friday for the home opener against California State San-Bernadino. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m at GVSU Soccer Field.
