#12 Lakers Dominate Cal State Bernardino in Home Opener

The 12th ranked GVSU soccer team gave the home crowd a show on Friday evening, scoring a flurry of goals in a 5-1 victory over Cal. State San Bernardino.

Freshman Tara Lierman drew first blood for the Lakers, netted her first career goal in the 36th minute off a double assist from senior Maddison Reynolds and another freshman, Samantha Riga.

"We got a lot of young players on the stat sheet, which is going to do wonders for their confidence and our offense", said head coach Jeff Hosler.

Just four minutes later, reigning National Player of the Year Marti Corby scored her second goal of the season when she took a pass from Gabriella Mencotti and slipped a shot past the charging Coyote goalie, giving the Lakers a 2-0 halftime lead.

In the 58th minute, forward Sara Stevens rebounded a deflected shot from Riga into a wide open net for the Laker's 3rd goal of the night, and her first on the season.

The Lakers shutout bid ended at the 72 minute mark, when Denae Verdine  got a second look at a blocked shot and fired home her second goal of the season.

The Lakers rebounded strongly, as leading goal scorer from last season Gabriella Mencotti scored off a corner kick fired by Marti Corby to push the Laker lead to 4-1.

Lierman added her second goal of the game in the 80th minute off an assist from fellow freshman Hannah Phommavongsa to round out the scoring for the game.

"I thought all of our freshman did pretty well, they all played more minutes tonight than every other match", Hosler said. "Sam (Riga) was involved in a few assists tonight because of her movement off the ball, Tara Lierman got opportunities and converted them because of her movement."

Despite conceding one goal, the Lakers defense played well, anchored by a strong effort in goal by freshman Emily Maresh, who made seven saves.

"Defensively, we did pretty good. They have two very dangerous forwards that we kept pretty well in check. Our adjustments in the second half helped to solve some of the issues we had in the first half defensively."

The Lakers return to action on Sunday when they host the Mavericks of Minnesota State (Mankato) at 1 p.m at GVSU Soccer Field. A game between Ferris State University and the Cal State Bernardino Coyotes will precede that game with a 10:30 a.m kick off.
