Lakers Suffer Tough Road Loss in Opener at Quincy

The GVSU womens soccer team dropped it's season opener Friday 3-0 despite outshooting their opponent, the Quincy Hawks, by a margin of 25-7.

"They played hard, and we didn't", head coach Jeff Hosler said. " They were opportunistic with their chances, and we weren't."

The Hawks scored their first goal on a header off a cross at the five minute mark, and followed with a second goal just 37 seconds before halftime.

GVSU, ranked #1 nationally by the NSCAA preseason poll, had a goal on a Kendra Stauffer shot but it was called back by an offsides whistle. The Lakers held a strong advantage in shots on goal but were unable to find the back of the net.

"When you generate 25 shots, and have their goalie make 13 saves, but not a single one is a diving save, it shows that our girls were shooting to not miss, instead of shooting to score", Hosler said.

Another Laker goal was whistled offside in the second half, and Quincy netted another goal to seal the game shortly after.

"Moving forward we have to be more urgent, more strong willed", Hosler added. "We have too many players standing and watching the game, we need to get better movement off the ball and look to create opportunities up the field".

Junior Marti Corby led the Lakers with 13 shots (five shots on goal).

The Lakers return to action on Sunday, when they face off against the Bulldogs of Truman State. Kickoff is set for 1 p.m.
