Box Score The Grand Valley State women's soccer team defended it's perfect home record on Friday, and it did it without any goals from it's leading scorer
Marti Corby.
The Lakers peppered the Dragons with 39 shots, scoring one goal in the first half and three in the second to push their season record to 7-1 (3-0 GLIAC).
Grand Valley was kept off of the scoreboard for a short while, thanks to an extremely back-loaded Tiffin team, but took the lead at the 18 minute mark after
Gabriella Mencotti found
Clare Carlson on a short slant pass to the middle of the box, which Carlson fired home for her third goal of the season.
"They got a lot of members behind the ball, which is to be expected.," GVSU head coach
Jeff Hosler said. "Their numbers behind the ball allowed us to get forward a lot, but I thought we weren't effective in our wide areas. Our final ball wasn't picking out players, we were off on our timing a lot. We did them a favor In the first half with our final ball."
A lack of finishing hurt the Lakers, as several great scoring chances were unable to be converted, keeping the lead at just one goal.
Marti Corby nearly scored her 12
th goal in the 23
rd minute on a free kick just a hair outside the 18 yard box, but her shot hit the far goalpost after it passed the goalkeeper, saving the goal.
Next was a corner kick, one of the 21 corner kicks Grand Valley would take on the evening, which passed across the entire length of the exposed net without being blocked. Several Lakers just missed knocking the goal into the net from short range, and it passed harmlessly out the other side of the goal box.
"The spacing, the shape and timing of runs played a lot into the opportunities we missed.," Hosler said. "There were at least five chances that easily could have been goals; but they weren't. It doesn't count unless you put it back in the net. There's a lot of little improvements we need to execute on better. "
Katie Klunder had the next opportunity to score for Grand Valley, as she was roughly taken down in the box by a Tiffin defender, earning the defender a yellow card, and Klunder a penalty kick. Klunder could not convert, however, as her shot was high and hit the cross bar.
In the second half, the Lakers retained their aggressiveness, and began to find cracks in the Dragon defense. Junior forward
Kendra Stauffer scored her fourth goal of the season off of a nice cross by
Jayma Martin just four minutes into the half. Klunder also assisted on the goal.
"In the second half we did a much better job stretching the game out and finding more opportunities, we had good timing on our runs, but again, the final ball wasn't always where it needed to be. "
In the 63 minute, Carlson would convert her second goal of the evening off of a
Marti Corby corner kick, opening the lead to 3-0. Just three minutes later, freshman forward
Samantha Riga rebounded a partial save by Tiffin goalkeeper Samantha Ortenzi off of a
Dani Johnson shot and netted her first career goal for the Lakers.
Recording assists for the Lakers were Klunder, Corby,
Gabriella Mencotti,
Jayma Martin and
Dani Johnson.
Defensively, the Lakers allowed just one shot all game, earning a team shutout. Starting goalkeeper
Paige Pryson recorded a save on the only shot she faced.
In the second game of the weekend, the Lakers hit the road to take on Malone in Canton, Ohio on Sunday at 12:30 p.m.
