The Grand Valley women's soccer team has recently had issues starting games off on the right foot. On Tuesday night at GVSU Soccer Field, that wasn't much of a problem.
The Lakers scored three times in the opening 10 minutes of the game on their way to a 6-1 rout of visiting Saginaw Valley State.
"We started really well, in the first 10 minutes all the ideas we had in mind on how to start came to be.," GVSU head coach
Jeff Hosler said. "Scoring 3 goals in the first ten minutes is a dream start, and I couldn't be happier with that start to a match."
Marti Corby scored three goals, her second hat trick of the week, and the Lakers received solo goals from
Kendra Stauffer,
Katie Klunder and
Gabbie Guibord as they improved to 6-1 on the season and 5-0 at home.
Corby got the Lakers on the board early, collecting a rebound from a
Clare Carlson shot off the post and putting it away for her ninth goal of the season. She would score her 10
th just six minutes later, taking a pass from
Jayma Martin with her back to the goal, turning around and rifling a shot to the far side of the net in one fluid motion.
Grand Valley would strike pay dirt just two minutes later, as Martin delivered another great pass into the middle of the box that
Kendra Stauffer put away for her third goal of the season.
Saginaw would strike with a goal of their own off of a set piece in the 22
nd minute, as Shelby Watts beat Laker goalkeeper
Emily Maresh with a high header into the net off of a free kick by Presley Tibbetts.
"The first half was a snapshot of our loss at Quincy, we were in control and possession, in this instance we had a lead, but we switched off on a set piece, an area where Saginaw Valley is very good at, and the game becomes much easier when you're switched off and not making those plays," Hosler said.
However Grand Valley would add a goal of their own before half, as
Katie Bounds took a pass from
Katie Klunder, penetrate along the right baseline before feeding the ball to the middle of the field, where Corby knew exactly what to do with it. Her quick strike gave her her third goal on the night and the Lakers took a 4-1 lead into the break.
Adding to the lead in the second half, GVSU would add goals at the 46 minute mark by Kate Klunder and at the 87 minute mark by
Gabbie Guibord, (2
nd and 1
st goal of the season, respectively) to round out the scoring in the victory.
"I'm very satisfied with the teams effort. Saginaw is a very good team, and we see them again in 10 short days, and they'll continue to be prepared, and give us one heck of a game next week."
Martin, starting her 2
nd game for GVSU, racked up three assists on the evening.
The Lakers received solo assists by Guibord, Klunder, Bounds,
Tracey McCoy and
Clare Carlson.
Grand Valley is back in action at home on Friday, playing host to Tiffin. Kick off is set for 7 p.m.
