The GVSU womens soccer team exploded for seven goals in a rout of Lake Erie College at GVSU Soccer Field on Sunday, the second of two games scheduled as part of the team's Alumni Weekend.
Â
With former members of the distinguished program looking on, the Lakers scored three goals in the first half and four in the second to improve their GLIAC record to 2-0 and overall record to 5-1.
Â
"We knocked the ball around well today, clearly creating a lot of goal scoring chances and capitalized on them," Head coach
Jeff Hosler said. "However I would've liked to see us generate more scoring chances with how much we were controlling the ball early, but once the ideas started to come to us, it got a lot better."
Â
Marti Corby, fresh off of a hat trick in Friday night's game against Findlay, scored two goals, her 7
th and 8
th of the season, and added an assist. Corby is well on her way to eclipse last season's mark of 12 goals and 13 assists, as she has scored eight goals and is tied for the team lead with four assists.
Â
Corby's strike at the 26
th minute shook the Lakers out of what had been a sluggish and uninspired start.
Â
"I think our possession was good early on, I just felt like we weren't looking to play forward or higher up the field as often as we should have," Hosler said. Â "I felt the team played a much better second half."
Â
GVSU added to the lead at the 27 minute mark, as junior
Jayma Martin was brought down by the goalie in the box for a penalty. She easily converted the penalty kick for her first goal of the season. She would add a goal in the 88
th minute off a deflected shot by
Gabbie Guibord came right to her in front of the open goal.
Â
Grand Valley harassed Storm goalkeeper Marissa Brannon with 40 shots (23 SOG), and turned a shot deflected by Brannon into another goal when
Sara Stevens fired home her second goal of the season at the 39 minute mark.
Â
The Lakers improved on their first half effort with a renewed vigor in the second. The Lakers registered almost twice as many shots in the second half as they did in the first, and
Added goals from junior
Clare Carlson (59'), freshman
Tara Lierman (63'), Corby (65') and Martin (88') to round out the scoring.
Â
Hosler notes the much improved team offense as a positive start to conference play.
Â
"Scoring 13 goals in two games of opening weekend without conceding one is a great way to start (GLIAC Play), I think the girls recognize areas where we need improvement, and some other ideas that we are looking at improving for the rest of the season," Hosler said.
Â
Corby and Martin both recorded two goals and an assist. Solo assists were recorded by
Gabbie Guibord,
Gabriella Mencotti,
Shannon Quinn and
Katie Bounds.
Â
With the ball spending the majority of the game on the Storm half of the field, the Lakers yielded just three shots to Lake Erie. Freshman
Emily Maresh and sophomore
Paige Pryson both saw time in goal as the Lakers registered a team shutout.

Grand Valley returns to action on Tuesday, September 22
nd, when it hosts Saginaw Valley State University at 7pm at GVSU Soccer Field in a non-conference matchup
