#10 Lakers Win Big in Rainy GLIAC Opener

Laker goals, like the rain, didn't come immediately.

However once reigning National Player of the Year Marti Corby found the back of the net for the first of her three goals on the night, 10th ranked Grand Valley shifted into high gear on offense, routing University of Findlay 6-0 on Friday at GVSU Soccer Field.

Marti Corby recorded a hat trick and added an assist for good measure, and GVSU shook off a near constant drizzle to put away their GLIAC opener in front of GVSU soccer alumni in town for the teams Alumni Weekend.

"I think her (Corby) mindset, as a returner, was preparing every day to be her best, every time out," head coach Jeff Hosler said. That consistency is contagious, and other players see it and want to have it., and its showing on match days. She's had very good outings every time out so far, on both sides of the ball."

Junior Kendra Stauffer added two goals for the Lakers, who improved to 4-1 on the season. Sophomore Gabriella Mencotti added a goal and assist, and freshman Samantha Riga assisted on two Laker goals.

"I thought we did a really good job, we had a really high number of passes completed tonight, we did well recognizing when to go forward," Hosler said. "We got a lot of players a lot of good minutes today, doing a lot of good things. A lot of players got on the stat sheet, and tonight was a good example of when we recognize opportunities and capitalize on them, how well that can turn out for us."

The Lakers yielded just three shots in the game, an obvious benefit of controlling the ball on the opponents half of the field for most of the game. Freshman goalkeeper Emily Maresh stopped the only shot on goal she faced, earning her second career shutout in the net.

"It's definitely tough for a team to attack you when you're on the ball, I thought after starting the match really well that we kind of settled and stopped playing with a sense of urgency, which allowed them opportunities to get some things going offensively, but I thought our girls adjusted to that well in the second half."

Junior Clare Carlson, senior Katie Klunder and freshman Tara Lierman each added one assist on the night.

The win against the Oilers pushes the GVSU lead in the all time series to 15-6-1 all time, and matches the result of last season's game, another 6-0 victory. Grand Valley will play the second game of the Alumni Weekend with a 1 p.m game on Sunday at GVSU Soccer Field against the Storm of Lake Erie College.  Grand Valley defeated the Storm 3-1 last season.
