#12 Lakers Topple #4 Minnesota State at Home

The  12th ranked GVSU soccer team scored twice in the first half and held firm against the Minnesota State offense to win 2-1 on Sunday afternoon at GVSU Soccer field.

"This is a great win for our program, we're a young team, and as for as many young players as we have, playing like that against a team of that caliber is great."

The win was the third in a row for the Lakers, who have outscored opponents 11-2 over that span. It was also the first loss for the 4th ranked Mavericks.

The Lakers struck quickly in the first half, as junior Clare Carlson scored off of a duo assist by Marti Corby and Kendra Stauffer in just the 4th minute of play.

GVSU recorded a total of 16 shots on the day, and took a 2-0 lead into halftime after junior midfielder Marti Corby netted her third goal of the season in the 38th off of a pass by substitute Katie Bounds.

"Katie Bounds is our "super sub", said coach Jeff Hosler. "She gave us another lift (off the bench), she comes in and gives us a lot of energy. She served up a perfect ball to Marti for the second goal."

In the second half, GVSU conceded a goal off of a corner kick at the 73' minute mark, but solid defensive play for the remainder of the half kept the Mavericks from scoring and sealed the victory for the Lakers.

"I thought our defense played well today, the first 45 was better defensively for us but I think our back line played great today", Hosler said. "They had a first team all american up top that wasn't very effective because of how organized we were, and I thought our center backs were the stars of the game."

Goalkeeper Emily Maresh (3-1) earned the win in goal. She allowed one goal and made six saves.

The victory raises the Lakers record to 3-1 on the season, and 2-0 at home. The team will look to defend it's home turf next weekend when they host Findlay on Friday (Sept. 18) and Lake Erie on Sunday (Sept. 20) for Alumni Weekend. Kick off is set for 7 p.m on Friday and 1 p.m on Sunday.
