GVSU was ranked fifth in the nation by Stack.com as one of the best colleges for female athletes in all NCAA divisions. The ranking system included results from student surveys on athletics, the percentage of women participating in varsity sports, and a championship score to place each school. 

The Lakers top the list for Division II athletic departments with four NCAA Division I programs taking the first four spots. UConn (first), UCLA, Notre Dame, and Arizona topped the list, while Grand Valley State placed in the 99.46% percentile to land at No. 5.
