PEPPER PIKE, Ohio – Grand Valley State women's lacrosse dominated from start to finish, winning 16-1 over Ursuline to pick up their fifth straight win of the season and push their record to 8-4 overall and 3-0 in the GLIAC.
Erika Neumen led the way for GVSU with four goals and two assists for six points, giving her 49 for the year and placing her fifth on the list of single-season point scorers. Her six-point outing in today's game puts her five behind
Ryan Skomial's 38 goal and 16 assist season in 2014 and
Rachel Leibovitz's 48 goal, six assist year in 2013. Neumen's four goals also gives her 42 on the year, placing her third on the single-season goals scoring list, six behind Leibovitz for second and 14 off of the top spot held by Allyson Fritts' 56 goal campaign in 2013.
Leibovitz and
Ashley Bailey each put two goals in the back of the net, while Bailey added an assist to give her a three-point day.
Maria D'Angelo also put up two points in the win, tallying one goal and one assist.
Carolyn Kraus led the team with four draw control victories, while
Kelly Leibovitz,
Rachel Leibovitz, Kraus, and
Sarah Zwilsky all scooped up two ground balls to lead the team. The Leibovitz sisters also paced the defense with two caused turnovers, and Zwilsky picked up the win with two saves against four Ursuline shots.
The senior Leibovitz scored the opening goal off a pass by Neumen at 26:57, and her score was followed by three consecutive unassisted tallies by Skomial,
Victoria Devine and Neumen in less than a minute to put the score at 4-0 in favor of the visiting Lakers.
After Leibovitz's second score of the afternoon, Bailey scored both her goals in back-to-back fashion before
Katie Tomlinson scored her first collegiate goal at 13:34 of the first half off a pass by Bailey.
Kira Dosenberry assisted on
Kerrigan Baird's third goal of the season, and Neumen tickled the twine for the second time in the half to put the Lakers up double-digit goals as the running clock rule went into effect. The Lakers led at the break by the score 10-0, the third straight game in which they held a lead of 10 goals or more going into halftime.
Neumen ripped a shot past the Ursuline netminder for the third time in the contest, this time after receiving a pass from
Zoe Stiemann, to resume the scoring for Grand Valley State at 26:25 of the second half.
Sarah Lowe assisted on D'Angelo's first Laker goal shortly afterword, and tallied her first assist in a GVSU uniform on Neumen's fourth goal of the day.
Kallie LaValle put herself on the board with
Bailey Ellsworth on the assist to five GVSU a 14-0 lead with 13:27 left on the clock.
The Arrows got on the board on an open net goal immediately following a foul by Zwilsky, preventing the sophomore goalkeeper from recording her second shutout of the season and the fourth of her short career. A
Jordan Luberto free position goal and an unassisted tally by
Chelsey Bishop were the final scores of the contest for the visiting Lakers as the final horn sounded.
Grand Valley State held advantage over Ursuline in every statistical category. They outshot the Arrows (30-4), scooped up more ground balls (17-11), gave the ball away fewer times (11-15), and were a perfect 10-10 on clears while limiting their opponent to converting just 5-12 clears. GVSU also kept Ursuline from accumulating any free position attempts while earning seven of their own.
The Lakes now host four consecutive games, starting on Sunday (Apr. 12) when they welcome GLIAC newcomer McKendree (9-2, 2-1 GLIAC) at noon. The teams last met in February 2014, with Grand Valley State rolling to a 21-4 win.
