Lakers Fall to #7 Le Moyne

SYRACUSE, N.Y. – In less than ideal conditions on a frigid afternoon, the Grand Valley State women's lacrosse team falls to #7 Le Moyne, 18-11, at Ted Grant Field. The Lakers fell to 1-3 with the loss, while Le Moyne improved their record to 2-0 with the W.

The Dolphins opened up the game with a goal under three minutes into the opening half, but Erika Neumen scored her 11th goal of the season off a feed by Carolyn Kraus at 25:54. Le Moyne retook the lead only 29 seconds later and extended their lead to two with back-to-back goals by Julia Suriani to give the highly-ranked Dolphins a 3-1 lead.

Kira Dosenberry scored an unassisted goal at 23:34 to cut into the Le Moyne lead, but the seventh-ranked team in the country went four goal run to build their lead to 7-2 with 14:41 left until the end of the half.

A Neumen goal off a free-position attempt preceded a goal by Ingraham from Neumen to make it a three-goal game, but the Dolphins went on another run of unanswered goals. The run, which lasted for over 10 minutes, saw the Dolphin lead grow to eight until Neumen buried her second free-position goal with 22 seconds left to bring the game into the half with the Lakers trailing 12-5.

Le Moyne opened the second half with consecutive goals to up their lead to nine before Neumen fired her fourth goal of the afternoon to make it a 14-6 score seven minutes into the contest. The Dolphins put two more in the net less than a minute apart to put the score at 16-6, putting the running clock into effect.

Not wanting to go down without a fight, GVSU reeled off three-straight goals in just over a minute. Rachel Leibovitz tallied her fourth goal of the season at 17:36, and she was followed by unassisted goals from Zoe Stiemann at 17:27 and Victoria Devine at 16:42 to draw the Lakers to within seven.

While they would be unable to put any more points on the scoreboard for the next nine minutes, the Laker defense and Sarah Zwilsky also kept the high-scoring Dolphins from scoring by forcing turnovers and making highlight-reel saves.

However, Erica Geremia, last year's Division III Attacker of the Year at SUNY Cortland, scored her fifth goal of the game to give the Dolphins an eight goal advantage. GVSU answered back with consecutive goals from Neumen at 4:30 and 1:48 to make the score 17-11, but a man-down goal by the Dolphins gave the game its final scoreline.

Neumen led all scorers in the game with six goals, giving her 16 on the year and tying her for seventh in Division II. She also tallied her first assist to give her 17 points through four games. She also pulled down seven draw controls, caused one turnover and scooped up one loose ball.

Niki Jacobs, Alyssa Neumen, and Caitlin Wojichowski all contributed with one caused turnover each, while Kelly Leibovitz picked up four ground balls, and Zwilsky scooped up two ground balls to go with her 11 saves.

While Grand Valley State was outshot (26-35) and lost the ground ball battle (15-23), they did pull down more draw controls (18-12) and limited Le Moyne to just 1-6 on free-position shots.

Grand Valley State concludes their Spring Break trip when they head to Pennsylvania to take on #18 Indiana (Pa.) on Monday (Mar. 9) at 1:30 p.m.
