Big Rapids, Mich. -- The Grand Valley State men's basketball team saw its late-season surge come to an end in Big Rapids, Michigan. The Lakers, who had won three consecutive games entering Thursday (Feb. 26) night, closed out their 2014-15 campaign with a 77-55 loss to archrival Ferris State.
Shots simply refused to fall for GVSU. The Lakers went 21-of-61 (35 percent) from the field, and 4-of-15 from distance, which rendered them unable to match Ferris State's scoring output. Turnovers proved to be costly as well, with the Bulldogs converting 14 GVSU giveaways into 19 points.
Although the Lakers limited Ferris State to 28 points on 10-of-32 shooting (31.3 percent) in the second half, a 20-point halftime deficit was too much to overcome.
GVSU stayed within five points through the first three minutes and change, though, it would trail by double digits from the 13:41 mark on.
The team's top performances all came from departing players. Senior guard
Ryan Sabin scored a team-high 12 points, junior guard
Ernijs Ansons poured in 10 points on 4-of-6 shooting and senior center
Darren Washington collected nine rebounds, notched two steals, handed out two assists and scored four points.
Three other Lakers—freshman forward
Drake Baar, junior forward
Ricardo Carbajal and sophomore guard
Luke Ryskamp—finished with seven points apiece. Baar and Carbajal combined for 10 rebounds as well.
Junior guard
Aaron Hayes tallied a team-high four assists.
In addition to the three aforementioned departing players, senior
Brandon Barkley recorded a block and collected a rebound in what was his final game as a Laker.
Sabin ends his decorated career with the fourth-most 3-point field goals (186)—he broke a tie with Kent Wiersma ('89) by making his lone triple of the evening at the 12:45 mark of the first half—and the third-most 3-point field goals attempted (508) in school history. The Byron Center, Michigan native also set a new school record for career free throw percentage (85.1 percent) and consecutive free throws made (42), a record that stood for 43 years.
GVSU ends its season with a 13-15 overall record and a 9-13 mark in GLIAC play.
