Sault Ste. Marie, Mich. -- For the second time in its last four games, the Grand Valley State men's basketball team had two players reach the 20-point mark. But it was not enough to upset No. 24 Lake Superior State in Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan. The Lakers shot just 37.8 percent (17-of-45) from the field, while LSSU went 26-of-50 (52.0 percent), as they fell 78-66.
Senior guard
Ryan Sabin poured in 21 points, 13 of which came at the free throw line. The Byron Center, Michigan native also drained a pair of three-pointers, vaulting him past former Laker Ed Finch ('90) and into a tie with Kent Wiersma ('90) for fourth place in the GVSU career record book. Sabin has made 185 trifectas in his four seasons as a Laker, which has him three shy of the third-most in program history.
Sophomore guard
Luke Ryskamp matched his teammate's 21-point outing. He also nabbed seven rebounds and went 7-of-13 from the floor.
The only other Laker in double figures was junior forward
Ricardo Carbajal, who scored 11 points and snared seven rebounds. Carbajal and Sabin finished with two assists apiece as well.
Had it not been for a slow start, GVSU may very well have been able to pull off a stunner in the Upper Peninsula. Shooting 21.7 percent (5-of-23) in the first half was just too much for the Lakers to overcome.
The second half was a bright spot for GVSU, though.
The Lakers outscored LSSU 44-42 in the closing 20 minutes, shooting 54.6 percent (12-of-22) to do so. They also added 15 freebies and made five of their 10 attempts from distance.
Both of Sabin's threes came in the opening 87 seconds of the half. He drained an unassisted triple at the 19:16 mark to tie Finch. Freshman guard
Sam McClendon set up Sabin's second trifecta on GVSU's next possession, which moved him into a tie with Wiersma.
The loss drops GVSU to 10-14 overall and 6-12 in GLIAC play. The Lakers will look to end their current skid and play the role of spoiler when Northwood comes to Allendale on Saturday (Feb. 14). Tip off is scheduled for 8 p.m. ET.
