Lakers Fall 72-65 to #13 Ashland

Box Score

The Grand Valley State women's basketball team fought hard but came up just short in a 72-65 defeat to #13 Ashland in conference play on Thursday (Dec. 3). GVSU sees their record fall to 4-2 and 0-1 in the GLIAC, while Ashland improves to 5-0 and 1-0 against conference opposition.

In a back-and-forth contest that saw 12 tie scores and nine lead changes, the Lakers battled their conference rivals for the entire game but saw their offense stall late in the fourth quarter to allow the Eagles to take the lead for the final time.

The Lakers pulled ahead in the 63-59 with 3:38 to go in the fourth quarter thanks to a put-back lay-up by Korynn Hincka, but the Eagles went on a run of 13 consecutive points to retake the lead for good.

Kayla Dawson led all players with a career-best 26 points off a 52.6% performance from the floor (10-19), including three three-pointers, and contributed defensively with one block and four steals. Dawson's performance tonight tops her previous career-high of 24 set against Lake Superior State on January 23, 2014.

Piper Tucker also contributed 10 points and four rebounds to the team in the loss, while Bailey Cairnduff led the team in rebounding with six while also putting up six points.

The Eagles were led by Laina Snyder, who recorded a double-double with 16 points and 18 of the team's 51 rebounds. Three other Ashland players scored in double figures, with McKenzie Miller leading the way with 18 points.

GVSU will look to move on from the loss when they host Lake Erie in a 1 pm tip-off at the GVSU Fieldhouse Arena on Saturday (Dec. 5).
