Laker Men Claim 85-79 GLIAC Road Win At Ohio Dominican

GVSU now 7-2 overall and 2-2 in GLIAC action

The Grand Valley State men's basketball team evened its GLIAC ledger at 2-2 on the year and improved to 7-2 overall with an impressive 85-79 road win at Ohio Dominican Sunday afternoon. GVSU will next be in action on Saturday, Dec. 19 at Cedarville, with top set for 4 p.m.

The opening 10 minutes were closely contested with neither team able to build much of a lead. Tied at 16-16 Chaz Rollins gave the Lakers an 18-16 lead with a pair of free throws, followed by a layup from Ricardo Carbajal and a two more free throws from Aaron Hayes to up the Laker lead to six (22-16). Freshman Zach West hit a pair of threes, the second of which concluded a 14-2 scoring run and put GVSU up 30-18 with 7:05 left in the first half. The Lakers led 44-37 after 20 minutes of play.

GVSU opened the second half with a 5-0 run and led 49-37 after a jumper by Ricardo Carbajal. ODU went on a 14-4 run over the next seven minutes and trailed by just two at the 13:22 mark of the second half. However, a Luke Ryskamp layup with 12 minutes left ended the Panther run and leading by three (57-54) the Lakers outscored Ohio Dominican 11-2 over a two minutes stretch to up its lead to 68-56. Senior Darren Kapustka and Hayes each hit three-pointers during that stretch. A jumper by West gave the GVSU its largest lead of the game (77-63) and Ohio Dominican would get no closer than the final margin of six.

The Lakers shot 52.7 percent from the floor and out rebounded ODU 47-30. Ryskamp led four Lakers in double figures with 24 points and eight rebounds. Carbajal added 18 points and nine rebounds, while Chaz Rollins tallied a double-double with 11 points and 11 rebounds. Hayes chipped in 14 points. Kapustka added nine points and freshman guard Zach West hit a pair of threes en route to eight points.
