The Grand Valley State men's basketball team faced one of the top-10 Division I teams in the country on Friday night (Nov. 6) and #7 Iowa State showed why it is one of the top teams in the nation heading into the regular season. Playing in front of of 14,384 fans on its home floor in Ames, Iowa, the Cyclones captures a 106-60 victory over the Lakers in GVSU's second exhibition game against a Division I opponent in four days.
On Tuesday night (Nov. 3), the Lakers fell at Cincinnati by a 93-63 score. Iowa State shot extremely well on Friday, shooting 60.7 percent rom the field in the game, which included a 16-for-32 mark from three-point range.Â
GVSU shot 35.6 percent from the field, but struggled at the free throw line with a 13-for-28 figure. Despite turning the ball over 16 times, the Lakers forced 15 ISU turnovers. Grand Valley State did score 25 bench points and were only outscored in the paint 34-28 by the Cyclones.
Three Lakers reached double figures, led by senior forward
Chaz Rollins' 13 points and eight rebounds. Rollins was 5-for-9 from the field and added two steals and a blocked shot. Juniors
Luke Ryskamp (pair of three-pointers) and
Trevin Alexander (four rebounds) each scored 11 points.Â
Senior guard
Aaron Hayes supplied nine points, four assists, and two steals, while freshman
Justin Greason came off the bench to total seven points and four boards in 11 minutes.Â
Rollins' early layup gave the Lakers their only lead of the game before Iowa State took a 7-2 advantage. Ryskamp's three-pointer and Greason's layup made it 12-7 before Iowa State began to connect from three-point range. The Cyclones were 9-of-17 from three-point range in the opening 20 minutes, including four consecutive trifectas in the final minutes of the half. ISU led 52-21 at the intermission.
Grand Valley State shot 25.8 percent in the first half, but connected at a 46.4 percent mark in the second half. The Lakers also drained 4-of-8 three-point attempts in the final 20 minutes, but Iowa State also shot better, making 65.6 percent of its second-half attempts.Â
After two exhibiton games against two very good Division I programs, GVSU has a little more than a week to get ready for the 2015-16 regular season. Next Saturday-Sunday (Nov. 14-15), Grand Valley State hosts the four-team GLIAC/GLVC Challenge in Allendale.
On Saturday, the Lakers will face Quincy at 4:00 p.m., which follows the opening 2:00 p.m. game between Ferris State and Missouri-St. Louis. GVSU will then play Missouri-St. Louis on Sunday, also at 4:00 p.m.Â
