The Grand Valley women's soccer team registered two victories Sunday afternoon at GVSU Soccer Field, but only one was against a soccer team.
The Lakers defeated GLIAC foe Northwood 5-1 in the day's soccer match, and scored a victory for their families and loved ones by raising over $2200 dollars for the Angel Wings Foundation through a silent auction and other donations.
"The money raised was the lone bright spot for the day, to raise over 2200 dollars and the efforts between our players, family and community, it was fantastic, I feel really good about that," said GVSU head coach
Jeff Hosler. "I appreciate the generous support and the work the girls put in through the week to support the event and get people here."
Despite the good results off the field, the Lakers struggled to find a rhythm on it, as the entire offense was out of sync for most of the game. The Lakers would open the scoring in the 8
th minute, as
Katie Klunder netted her fourth goal of the season off of an assist from
Kendra Stauffer.
"I thought we played very lethargic for the first 45 minutes, I'm really disappointed with the way our starters approached the game today," Hosler said. "Really disappointed in the way the first half went. Second half was better, but the focus and execution was still not good.
Dynamic substitute
Katie Bounds would double the lead in the 24
th minute, recovering a partially saved ball in front of the goal off of a corner kick and knocking it in for her second goal of the season.
The Lakers defense buckled in the 40
th minute, as the Timberwolves got a ball into the box to Savannah King, who fired the shot past sophomore goalkeeper
Paige Pryson to cut the lead in half going into the break.
"The goal was troubling, we haven't defended well all week, and for us to concede a goal today is very disappointing."
In the second half, reigning Player of the Year
Marti Corby took control, scoring a brace of goals to pick up the Lakers. She scored her 13
th goal of the season in the 61
st minute, heading a ball served in by senior
Katy Woolley backwards into the goal, and netted her 14
th just eight minutes later, serving up a beautiful free kick to the left of the goal, completely fooling the opposing keeper.
Sophomore forward
Gabriella Mencotti would add to the Laker lead in the 79
th minute, as she was brought down in the box by the Timberwolves goalkeeper, and earned herself a penalty kicker. The no-doubter pushed the Laker lead to four and was Mencotti's fourth goal of the season.
Despite the final scoreboard showing in favor of the Lakers, the offense was out of sync throughout most of the game, and multiple scoring opportunities were missed because of poor execution.
"Offensively, it goes back to our focus and execution. We had players hit the post after they beat the keeper , players serving a ball forward to empty field instead of picking out someone to pass to, just a total lack of focus today."
GVSU returns to action on Friday at 7 pm, as they travel to take on the undefeated Ashland Eagles.
