The Grand Valley State women's soccer team took away more than just a victory from Friday's game against the #21 Ashland Eagles in Ashland, Ohio.
Â
The Lakers handed the Eagles their first loss this season, and earned their fourth road win of the season in strong fashion, winning 5-0.Â
Â
GVSU got on the board very quickly, as
Gabbie Guibord found the back of the goal just two minutes into the game off of a corner kick from
Marti Corby.
Â
"We played really well, we scored early and often," GVSU head coach
Jeff Hosler said. "Our set pieces were great, our execution was great, our girls had a good understanding of what they had to do in the match, and it showed. We played great in the first half, I thought we were a bit too direct in the second half, lacked a little patience, but overall we did really well tonight."
Â
Junior forward
Kendra Stauffer added to the GV lead in the 12
th minute, capitalizing on an Ashland defensive error to score her sixth goal of the season to make it 2-0.
Â
Striking again off of a set piece, GV score their third goal in 15 minutes when
Shannon Quinn netted her first of the season off a
Marti Corby corner kick.
Â
Grand Valley received goals from
Marti Corby (27') andÂ
Katie Bounds (40') in the half to push their halftime lead to 5-0. The score would stay that way, giving the Lakers their 11
th straight victory and second victory over a ranked opponent this season. Corby added three assists in the game.Â
Â
The Lakers conceided just three shots on goal, which
Emily Maresh saved for a shutout.
Â
"Defensively, our back line was exceptional, they played well all night long," Hosler said. "I thought Emily did a great job from goal, organizing the defense. Ashland brought out some unexpected forms of attack and I thought out girls responded really well on the fly, making adjustments on the fly."
Â
Grand Valley is back in action on Sunday, when they take on the Panthers of Ohio Dominican at 12 p.m.Â
